Tire damage on tag

Any idea what caused this tire damage on my DSDP 4018 tag? It's on the passenger side. Click image for larger version

If the wear on the inside edge of the tire is the same , I'll say under-inflation too.
If the inside isn't worn , then tag axle camber or toe in, alignment required.
If the outer edge of the drivers side tag tire has similar wear, then toe in , or just being on the tag , can be a factor .
You have to stop half way through a right angle corner and look at what happens to the tire to see how the wear occurs; in a sharp corner the tire is being dragged sideways

Could be scrubbing due to making tight turns without dumping the tag suspension air.

I have about the same miles on my Michelin tires and coach. I put half of them on and the dealer put the other half on the odometer. I mostly remember to dump the tag axle. I assume the dealer did as well... to show off the tag dump feature. My tag tires look pretty good compared to this photo. Hope this data point helps.

It is certainly not under inflation. I had the coach weighted and if anything I'm running the tag a little bit higher than the Michelin table says.

I think it is indeed damage from not dumping the tag when going around tight corners. I guess I have to make a habit of dumping the air in those tags. I will take a closer look based on the replies tomorrow and will report back ( I have not looked at all at the inside of that tire).

Why dump the tag, unless your in reverse? I believe you have a 2016 and have Freightliners UltraSteer. With UltraSteer those tag tires should be turning (opposite of your steer tires) whenever you are making a low speed turn. If the UltraSteer is not working correctly, and not unlocking the axles I agree you would be dragging those tag tires.

The inside of that tire looks perfectly normal - no damage.

The coach will be at Freighliner next week for the air bag and wheel upgrade. I will ask them what they think could cause the damage. Yes. my tag axle steers and it SHOULD dump when in reverse. I will report back after I get the coach back by the end of next week.

Thanks for everybody's help.

How does the tire on the other side look? If it is scuffing you would think it both sides would exhibit something similar? Might also send the photos to Michelin for comment or stop by a Michelin truck tire dealer. Maybe a bad tire?

I figured out why my tire was damaged - even before I talked to Freightliner. My tag never dumped the air, even when I was backing up. At the RV storage facility I need to make some very sharp turns to get into our assigned space. With the tag bag fully inflated, the tag and tire were dragging badly.

I never understood that stupid switch on the 2016 DSDPs. In a thread here in the Newmar forum someone asked about the proper settings for the tag. That's what got my attention. I now have it set, so that the tag dumps the air when in reverse, but not during slow forward movement - mainly because the tag steers when moving forward.

Thanks to everyone for helping me understand what was going on.
