Toad for my Bay Star Sport

I am considering a vehicle to tow behind my 2015 Bay Star Star Sport 3309 which is on a 20,500 chassis. My three candidates are a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, a Chevy Colorado 4x4 or a Ford F-150 4x4. The Ford is pushing the 5000 lb limit - I would be limited to a few models, extended cab only that have curb weights under 5,000 - around 4700-4800 lbs. The Chevy has a curb weight about 4,600, so it's actually not much lighter than the Ford, but it is shorter. Jeep seems best from weight and length standpoint. The Chevy has a complicated flat towing prep that requires a battery disconnect (due to steering issues). Both a Jeep and Ford have relatively simple prep for flat towing. I am interested in this forum's experiences...

We've towed two different Jeep Wrangler Unlimiteds (2008 and now 2012). They make great Toads.

Super simple 4 down tow procedure. Put the transfer case in N, trans in Park for auto or 6th for manual and go.

With your MH, I'd try to stay as light as possible and the Jeep is it. We used to tow the 2008 with a E450 based class C.

Jeeps look awesome behind a motorhome. And I understand they have a simple yet reliable powertrain that is well suited to life as a toad. Not sure if it would be as comfortable inside as a F150 though; in my opinion they haven't updated interiors.....

The F150 is a great vehicle. Lots of space, in fact so much so that you can carry a spare tire in the back for your longer journeys. We love using the F150 as a toad but our next one would be a supercrew not the supercab - our daughters have long legs!

I can't say honestly that I know much about the new Colorado/Canyon. They look really good and are actually very big, but that leads me to this; why not just get a full size truck for the nominal price difference?

At the end of the day I suspect it will come down to weight for your decision.

Jeep Wranglers are probably the most popular toad for any MOHO. They are also the coolest and when you are driving it, other Jeepers wave to you. Very simple procedure to get in tow mood.

Here's our set up, including yaks.

Have you considered a used 5 speed Ford Escape? we towed a 2012 for a few years behind our C without issues. It weighed in at 3600 lbs with a full tank of gas. The only reason we sold it was a decision to stop towing and to rent when a car was needed. It was just less trouble given the number of times we actually needed to flat tow.

I tow a Chevy Equinox automatic transmission. My MH Chassis is the same as yours. The toad is only 3800 lbs so it gives me more weight for storage in my motorhome. I would suggest against bumping up against your max tow capacity.

I now think we are going with a 2016 Lincoln MKX. It weighs the same as the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, and has a mode for being towed behind a RV
