Toyota and Mazda teamed up on the Mazda 2/Yaris clone, and we purchased a 2016 manual transmission Yaris LE 5-door Hatchback specifically for towing four-wheels down behind our Canyon Star.
Selling price on the Yaris was approx $15,000, and setting it up with Blue Ox towbar equipment and auxiliary brake controller cost another $3500. So far, over 6,500 miles and it has performed extremely well at speeds in the 63 mph range, and up to 78 mph on one occasion.
Yaris is light (2,315 lbs), compact, and easy to set up for the daily tow: brake controller on, tested, key on AUX, handbrake off, gearshift in Neutral. Toyota recommends running the engine for about 3 minutes after a day of towing, so I do that while I'm unhooking the tackle.
Good hunting for your toad. Ribbit!
