TPMS & Rubber Valve Stems

When I expanded my TST TPMS to cover my current toad almost 2 years ago (24' enclosed trailer) I upgraded those four trailer tires. Told my tire guy I needed metal valve stems but he said he had "heavy duty" short rubber ones. Contacted TST and they said the smaller non-flow thru sensors could be used with rubber valve stems.

Yesterday we were approached SD from Iowa and pulled into RA. I didn't even get back to my toad and could hear the loud hissing. About that same time the DW opens the coach door to inform me there is some kind of alarm going off (TPMS monitor).

You guessed it, rubber valve stem had failed. So in a pleasant balmy 90 degree rest area I tossed the spare on (who am I kidding, at my age I don't toss anything), or more accurately I grunted and groaned and changed the tire. Went to the next Flying J up the road and had a curved metal stem put on. Then our course changed my original tire back.

I don't care what TST claims, I'm having the other three valve stems changed to metal.

I had a similar experience with my Class C sprinter. TST said rubber OK, but the inner rears just wouldn't hold air consistently with the rubber. I replaced them with metal, and had a terrible time finding someone who undersoond what I needed and could do what I wanted. The angles on the stems as replaced still didn't extend past the outer wheel, and I added 4" braided metal extenders to allow the minimum of flex that I needed to clear the outer aluminum wheel opening. The extensions layed against the sharp edge of the inner opening, and I couldn't find rubber stabilizers that worked for my wheel and stem position. I ended up putting a short piece of PEX over the part of the braided extension that was against the outer opening lip. Since then have put on about 1200 miles with no issues whatsoever. In hindsight, I should have paid the money for the sprinter specific stems, but for now, this is working for me.

We are in the Spearfish area for 9 or 10 days so I'm hoping I can find a regular tire dealer to put regular metal valve stems on. These toad tires are only 14 ply 15" so it shouldn't be a problem. I might even stop by the local Walmart and see it they stock metal stems in their tire shop.

The shop at Flying J charged me $32 to throw the one in, and that was with me rolling the tire into their shop and out of their shop. Hoping to get new metal stems put in and maybe the tire re-balanced for $20 or so each.
