I have a question. I will be traveling soon, the forecast is predicting a high temp of 109 and I have a 6% grade for several miles. My 05 Dutch Star is well maintained, should I be concerned with the coach traveling in this temperature? Last time I pulled this grade it was 100 and my engine temp reached 213. What's the hottest temp you've have traveled in?

213 is on the higher side of normal, so it is OK.
220-225 would be a concern. I've seen 217 on
a hot, hard climb, and my Cummins guru said
that I was OK as well.

Sounds like somewhere around Quincy..like this coming weekend mebbe???....inquiring minds....

If the cooling system is in good shape you should have no problems.

Yeah, very close. You sound familiar with the area. My concern is pulling the grade at Vantage in 109 degree heat on Thursday. Not too overly concerned on flat ground. I know the key is to downshift and keep the RPM around 2000.

Each Summer, we make a trip to Potholes State Park, in Eastern, WA, in late Aug. Coming home, I have gotten a warning tone while pulling my coach and a toad up the Vantage hill. I think mine come on around 210-215 degrees, All I do it just reduce my speed and make sure the rpms stay high by manually shifting the Allison down. It goes away very quickly and I now just take this hill a little slower, each year. Have fun...

Yup, will be @ the Grant County Recreational campground #15 (Just past the Thousand Trails @ Crescent Bar)Thurs thru Monday..
Have been invited to a 50th High School reunion in Quincy.
Might jump into the toad and run over to Moses Lake for the County Fair just for gits & shiggles.

"saddlesore"....Are yo going to be towing your toad? If so, disconnect it and have someone drive it up the grade. If you're a rear radiator coach, drop a gear and keep the fan speed up. If you're a side radiator, take it easy and keep the RPM in it's power range, slow down if you have to.

I shouldn't have any issues with pulling a grade while dragging the toad, .... but thnx for the reminder which may be read by others following the thread.

How about getting an early start before the heat sets in? If you start at 6 am, by 9-10 am you should be at your destination or close.

Leaving that early isn't an option, as I have to work part of the day. I more I research the more comfortable I am about traveling with temps that high. I'll just keep a close eye on the scan gauge and adjust speed / RPM if needed.

Spent a fair amount of time in Quincy working with potatoes. Make sure and get a Space Burger while you are at the fair!

And I am IMPRESSED with the Grant County/PUD RV Park here in Crescent Bar!!!
Altho the water and sewer isn't "on Line" yet.. VERY well lay'd out and larger than expected lot sizes... $40 per night..20a/30a/50a electric... good clean, strong and steady power..
