Trip Across the U.S. Hitting Every State

My wife lives on Facebook and she came across this trip. Click on the link below to see this amazing trip! We're retired and we just might do this:

Figuring it out is an interesting problem, but I can't imagine actually taking a trip like that. It skips many, many fantastic places, in order to see some much less interesting ones.

Utah, California, Wyoming, South Dakota, and quite a few other states each have several sites that it would be a crime to miss while in the neighborhood. There are also several states at the other end of the spectrum.

A fellow RVer in his 60s told me he had completed, not all that long ago, the Iron Butt Association's "Lower 48 in 10 Days" motorcycle challenge. Here's a link to the rules. Partway down the page is a link to sample routes.

As this fellow told me about what the challenge entailed, I had one of those mind-dislocations that occurs when I discover something almost totally foreign to my experience (and personality). Compared to that ride, Dr. Olsen's suggestions are like strolls in the park.

Perhaps I should join the "Slow RV" movement, if it exists. ;-)

Something like this trip is definitely NOT seeing America! You need to explore the full state not just step your foot into it. This is like those maps folks have to show what states they've been to. Most often they go out of their way to get right inside the boundary and then can say they've been in the state.

We're still at least a year away from being able to hit the road and tour the country. What I am doing in the meantime is using a spreadsheet to compile a list of the things we would enjoy seeing and then sorting the list by state. I read lots of blogs and watch lots of youtube to see where others have gone. If it sounds like something DH and I would enjoy, it gets added to our list. This way, when we go to a state, we'll have a ready made list of what we want to see. As for our route, that is something we'll plan when we know our departure date. I'm hoping this works better for us than using someone else's list.
