"Trip Permit" to buy diesel in Oregon?

We stopped at a Pilot station on I-84 today and I went in to do the usual pre-authorization. The lady at the counter asked if we were a truck? I said no, a motorhome. She asked "are you less than 26,000 pounds?" Since we are 28K, I said no. She told me I needed an "Oregon trip permit" to buy diesel for a motorhome over 26K. Thinking quickly, I said "oh...OVER 26,000 pounds...no, just under. "OK, I can sell you diesel.

Has something changed in Oregon or was this a badly misinformed employee? She asked another employee nearby if a trip permit was need for over 26,000 pounds and got a "yes" answer from her as well. So, there were at least two Pilot employees on the same page...maybe the wrong page, but they were both on it.

Don't know, I buy fuel in WA state, then at 7 Feathers in southern OR, then in AZ. Have never been asked what my rig weighs.

Has to do with PUC pricing. Either their system is limited in being able to charge you fuel taxes, or the employee isn't trained how to sell you taxed fuel.

Were you at the Truck Pumps or at the Car Island ? Taxes would be different I would think.
Save yourself the headaches of pre-paying / get a Pilot RV card.

PS We have filled in Oregon numerous times and not encountered this issue

From reading the link, it would appear that the PUC Trip Permit program does not apply to motorhomes as they are specifically restricted from participating in the program...

"This permit can’t be used on:
Motor Homes; and
Tow/recovery vehicles."

Sounds like the Pilot Employees are mis-informed.

"Trip Permit" to buy diesel in Oregon?

Pilot was confused or the way you worded it perhaps confused the employee.
Permitted commercial trucks don’t pay tax on fuel so the truck pumps don’t include taxes and car pumps do. normally today , with electronic pumps it can be changed .. tax included or not at the pump.
someone just really misunderstood in their job. You just needed to pay the .25cent or so more at the commercial truck pump as you aren’t a exempt puc permitted vehicle. You don’t have puc permit because you don’t file and pay the hefty commercial per mile tax instead Nothing has changed in Oregon
What she must have been saying is you can’t have the truck price ( true) and needed to pay the taxed price .. but not very well

I think you probably hit the crux of the matter. I did explain that I was a private motor home and not a commercial vehicle. And, yes, we were in the truck fueling lane where I almost always go. Probably just a misunderstanding.

Had a completely different experience today at the PFJ travel center near Missoula, MT. They have two dedicated pump lanes labeled "RV and Auto diesel" where my Visa card was accepted at the pump, my Good Sam Card was accepted as a "rewards card" for an 8 cent/gallon discount and I was in and out in less than 10 minutes. What a difference!
