Ventana VS Dutchstar

Fire away

What's the "real" differences?

The dealer says "only foo foo stuff", but I submit to the real owners.

The older Ventanas did not have comfort drive. They do now. The dutchie has a independent front suspension. The Ventana a straight axle I am thinking. But the big difference is horsepower. The dutchie has more at 450, which is not much for a rig that size. Other then that they are pretty much the same.

We have been looking at both and there are many differences
1. DS has side radiator and 450HP
2. DS has Hydro hot system in most coaches and can be all electric
3. DS interior is all solid wood no MDF Veener on cabinets
4 furniture in DS more plush
5. DS larger Generator

More Info

There is a pretty detailed thread here http://www.irv2.com/forums/f103/decision-quandry-180237.html#post1769440. I used much of this information before making a decision. It really comes down to what you personally want because everyone is different or has different needs. We went with the Ventana 4369. As you will find in the posts either coach is a excellent choice. One item mentioned in the posts is confusion regarding Hydronic heat in the Ventana. I have the Oasis Hydronic system in our Ventana and it works great.

Good luck with your review

It's more than foo foo stuff, but the current Ventana's are much better equipped than the older ones. The newer ones are closer to older DSDPs.

You can read the Hoot's threads and others in their decisions deciding on which they decided on.
Good luck in your decision.

what about number of A/C units? You see, my sales guy will tell you ANYTHING. I went and looked at a ventana, and saw three of those nice wooden things in the ceiling and asked if it had three a/c units, and he said yes - but it seems to me the ventana only comes with two A/C units?

You can have three

If there are three in the overhead it has three. My Ventana has 3 15k Penguin A/C Heat Pump units.

Hi,
The 2014 DSDP brochure is at https://comnet2.newmarcorp.com/insta.../2014DSDPB.pdf

The 2014 Ventana brochure is at
https://comnet2.newmarcorp.com/insta.../2014VTDPB.pdf

Print the brochures and go through them, in detail. You'll see the differences. The bottom line is are the differences of value to you?

I read the lengthy discussion of a year ago on Ventana/Dutch Star. I found it odd that most considered the side vs rear radiator issue more of a thing on changing belts. While it is nice that the belts are handy, I believe the issue was totally overlooked or misunderstood (or just don't know). Cleaning and cooling is the big issue when it comes to side vs rear. A rear-facing radiator catches all the stuff that the wheels can throw at it. That includes moisture, dust, mud, dirty air -- you name it. Also, keep in mind that there's more than one cooling system back there. There is also the charge air cooler (aka intercooler). It's responsible for cooling the air that goes into the turbo which, in turn, is partially responsible for the extra power you'd like to use going up a hill. After it goes over the cooling fins for that it gets to the radiator for coolant that circulates through the engine. Diesel engines like to be warm but they don't like to be hot.

Now, try to clean those two layers of fins. It's much easier in a side radiator (which doesn't get as dirty as quickly) than standing on your head with your oldest clothing while you try to get to the corners hidden by the shroud. Cleaning in the center is only one-half of the battle.

Side radiator wins any day of the week when there's an option. Of course, if you don't clean your own it isn't a problem until climbing a hill on a hot day and there's no where to pull over to cool the engine so it won't overheat.

Our local dealer is small and he wasn't stocking any diesels. I stopped by in January to leave my number so he could call me when he got some diesels in. To my surprise, he had two 40' Ventana's and two 40' DutchStars (4018). He had the Ventana's loaded with about 25 options and on sale for $239K.

I found this to be a pretty good price and my wife and I started looking seriously at a new Ventana. We had already narrowed our search to either a Tiffin or Newmar. We really liked the Ventana and was about to pull the trigger when I really started looking at the difference between the Ventana and the Dutch Star.

The Dutch Star was about 30K more and really had some items I always wanted in my next coach. The DS had the 450 HP engine, but personally I believe some of that extra power is used up to drive the side radiator pump. You can also have the Ventana 400 ISL bumped to 450 HP for about $2500.00, but a side radiator was ALWAYS on my next coach must have list. I do my own servicing and wanted the access.

So the biggees for me were, 450 HP, Side Radiator, Oasis Heating (available only on the Ventana 43'), power locking bays, IFS and a few other items, but most importantly, Ventana didn't rhyme with Don like Dutch Star did.
