With all due respect, DirecTV does not have satellite data. The DirecTV menu does include lots of streamable video but that is streamed using "normal" methods. The satellite connection provides no internet capability.

Our Wifi experience: Verizon vs. T-Mobile

About 18 months ago, we decided to test T-Mobile for Internet access on one iPad. It worked so well that we later moved our iPhones to T-Mobile. We maintained a Verizon Jetpack for those areas where T-Mobile was lacking. This reduced our monthly Verizon bill from $220 to a combined Verizon/T-Mobile bill of $139 a month. This covers two iPhones, an iPad and a Verizon Jetpack.

I maintained a spreadsheet documenting the download speeds at 66 campgrounds across the western half of the US and our recent trip to Nashville, Pensacola and along the Gulf coast to Houston. The results are:

T-Mobile Better: 33
Verizon Better: 27
Tie: 6

Note: When T-Mobile is better, it tends to be much faster than Verizon. Pretty amazing speeds up to 49 MB/sec.

With the proliferation of mobile devices, the networks are getting congested and more often we're finding it behaves like campground WiFi. We use Verizon and AT&T and I'm seeing the same thing on both. Get LTE in an area with good infrastructure and not too many people it's wonderful. Right now in a small eastern mountain town, and the signal strength is great. But last evening I could get maybe 100k from Verizon on average during early evening. Ten PM I could stream video after people went to bed or put down their phones.

I don’t know. Does a Verizon iPad port directly with existing radio and SIM to T-Mobile?

I don't understand your question, but the T-Mobile store put a T-Mobile SIM card in my iPad and I now have T-Mobile cellular and it operates as a hotspot up to 10 GB per month. The mobile hotspot feature was a special offer at that time.

This is deceiving (not that Verizon would ever do that) and misinformation. I have beyondUnlimited and when I heard of that same information in aboveUnlimited I figured for $10 more a month I'll take the extra hot spot data. So I upgraded right away and my MiFi 7730 hotspot was still at 15 GB. Where's the 20 GB I was supposed to move to? Nope, that's only on your PHONE line, the hotspot is still capped at 15 GB. The 75 GB is also NON hotspot data on your PHONE line only, i.e. streaming whatever.

beyondUnlimited is 15 GB hotspot on phone lines, 15 GB on hotspot devices

aboveUnlimited moves the phone hotspot to 20 GB if I recall, I immediately switched back to beyondUnlimited then the usual 2 months of getting my bill straightened out again as they tacked on cloud backup for $4/month, etc. without my consent.

A tip to all for saving bandwidth/data if you're using a WiFi ranger or central wifi device in your coach. Turn off WiFi on your phones so they use their own data and do not use hotspot data coming over wifi. Let your TV's, tablets, other than phone devices use the hotspot data while your phones use their own and that will help conserve hotspot data usage.

FMCA does offer a Verizon plan, however when we looked at it we were not going to save any money. We would have lost the discounts we had in place plus as someone already said you have to extend your FMCA membership out 2 years.

We have only noticed being throttled back on speed when our overall package hits 22 gigs. But I suppose that depends on where you are and how much congestion there is on the Verizon system.

Short of having two different vendors for getting data, or two different Verizon unlimited accounts, I'm not sure there is much available for RVers to get a month of reliable fast internet consistently. We simply do everything we can to take advantage of the wifi at different campgrounds and try to stretch our data on the Verizon MiFi. We never let our devices update on the Verizon MiFi either.

We were trying to stream television.

What I meant to say was that we bought a satellite dish for the RV and a DirecTV television plan. Streaming television with Verizon Unlimited data and AT&T Mobley unlimited data, along with the over the air antenna, was not working for us while traveling full time in the RV.

Sorry for the confusion.

Have used directv now and AT&T using RUKU and cell phone hot spot. Have not had any throttling issues when past the 20g soft data cap. But we don’t watch tv for hours on end like some folks.

T-Mobile

Hello -

Thank you for this thread, as I have found it very helpful.

I wanted to add that I had T-Mobile Unlimited for over two years. T-Mobile has a senior discount unlimited (I believe the criteria is 55 yrs of age). Using this plan I had 2 iphones on unlimited; the first at $50 month, the second only an additional $10 per month for a total of $60 all taxes, fees, etc. included in the $60. I believe (not sure) they increased the second line for a total of $70. One line alone, though, is $50 - all taxes, fees, etc. included. I never had an issue using the iPhone hotspot for laptop work, but, I'm not a streamer, more of work, email, internet research.

The downside is Nappanee (factory and all of Nappanee) does not support T-Mobile and given the time we have spent in Nappanee in the last 18 months, well it was quite a disappointment until finally I've given in and ported to Verizon. (I was lost on the back roads of Indiana in the toad with no phone service/map service).

I don't know the GB of the hotspot on this T-Mobile plan, I do know for an additional $20 per month, so one phone w/ upgrade to $70 month increases the amount to hotspot usage one can access.

We have had Verizon for many years and all of the 7 years we’ve traveled by RV. The stream with the Hotspot or Mifi and you get a total of 15 gigs per device so for us a total of 45 gigs. The disappears faster than we think it would and we have never resolved that part of the issue. We do have unlimited gigs on our phones but as I mentioned that only applies to the phone usage without the Hotspot Turned on.
When we are staying for awhile in one place and the park subscribes to Tengo Internet, then we buy their service for about $12 per month.
All the best,

Jeff and Lynn

We switched from Verizon to T Mobile. T mobile had a senior plan for $60, all fee taxes etc included, for two phones with unlimited talk, text, and data. Both phones support hot spots. Data speed is throttled after so much data is used ( forget the amount) For $10 per month more, per phone they do not reduce the speed. We have one phone with unreduced speed the other without. For a total of $70 per month we have everything we had from Verizon for less than half the cost. So far we have had good coverage and are totaly happy with the change.

I think the best solution is to get a Trav'ler Dish Network antenna for the roof of your rig and bring your S&B Hopper with you on the road. Then you wouldn't need to use any bandwidth at all. When you return home, just move the receiver into your house and pick up where you left off.

Mike,
The reason for this is not actually for when we are traveling & camping in coach as we do have a Trav’ler. At some point in thread I think I explained it’s to try to solve getting rid of Comcast at our summer house in Michigan we spend 2-3 months at through the year.

I appreciate all the insight as it’s been very helpful and we are still exploring options.
