Washing machine water use experiment

Today was laundry day and we decided to see how much water was used for a load of washing. In searching past threads, we've found a few references to water use, but nothing definitive. Thus, the experiment.

First, I emptied the gray water tank completely. Then, the DW ran four average loads of laundry. (Yes, I did watch the tank gauge display closely, just in case!). We tried to make the quantities of clothes fairly equal in each load to get a good average.

After four complete loads, the tank display read 37% full. With a 65-gallon gray water tank, 37% comes out to just slightly over 24 gallons (24.05 to be exact). So, each load used just six (6) gallons. Now, I do know that the tank displays are not precision instruments, but they are the best indicator available.

So, going forward, I will have no concern about doing a couple of loads of laundry (or, even four) without having the gray water valve open.

When Becky does laundry I first empty the grey water tank and re-close the valve. She does two and no more than three loads and I empty the grey tank and close the valve. I’ve never seen the level approach 2/3 on our 60 gallon tank. I too watch the levels closely. I’m a advocate of not leaving tank valves open.

That's good to know. Can you do dishwasher next? I was planning to do the same, but you are saving me the effort.

The "dishwasher" will be a little harder to get consistent results with. Sometimes I am the dishwasher; other times, the DW is the dishwasher! We opted out of the actual "dishwasher" in our coach.

Thank you for this information!
I appreciate your effort and sharing the results with everyone.
I also do not like to leave the Grey tank open.

Just to be clear, our experiment was with the new model Whirlpool washer that has been installed in 2018 and later Newmars. I think the one in our 2018 Mountain Aire is the same as is used in all the other Newmar models from 2018 on.

If you have a 2017 or earlier Whirlpool washer, your results may not be the same.

As an aside, the DW really likes the new washer/dryer set. Says it is easy to use and does a good job.

JIm….Please try and be more accurate next time. You should have used a five gallon bucket and measured the water more carefully.

I keep picking up little tidbits about the new coaches. We NEVER had an issue with the washer and dryer in our 2014, but apparently others did. Now you're saying there's a newer model being used. Hopefully a better model.

Don, same here with our 2013. Never had a problem, and used it a lot with 6 people.

The 2019 is much improved, and feels much heavier duty. I am impressed with it. I am doing load #4 for tonight with gray tanks closed, although now I see the need for my test no longer exists since TJ beat me to it.

A nice feature of the newer model is that it heas the water; there's only a cold water inlet. I'd think that'd be more efficient than the older model.

Well I will rain on the parade a bit. Our 2018 washer has thrown a code that literally NO ONE (including Whirlpool chief engineer) can figure out. It tops the list of warranty items at the end of the month. BTW, the code is den...
