What are you towing behind your Newmar

We just purchased a 2022 Baystar 3014. We will get it in September and in the meantime I will be determining what TOAD to pull. We plan to flat tow. We currently have a 2018 GMC Canyon. Do I use it our trade for something lighter? We are newbies so will take any and all feedback. Thanks!

You need to determine your coach connected weight rating (GCWR) vs. your Canyon's weight...you may have been told that the coach has a 5,000 lb. weight hitch, but that doesn't necessarily mean you can tow a 5,000 lb vehicle. You will want to look at your coach's GVWR - GCWR = towing capacity. On our first diesel pusher, we had a 5k hitch but could only tow a max of 3,800 lb. vehicle due to the above....still a lot of vehicles out there at 3,800lbs max though.

You will also need an auxiliary brake system, most states require anything being towed over 1500lbs have an aux brake system.

Congrats on ordering your new BayStar. We have a 2019 3408 model and love it. We looked at the 3014 several times before settling on ours. We were drawn to the opposing slides for a bit more space.

We tow a 2020 Ford Escape Hybrid AWD. I believe it weighs about 3900# and is VERY easy to tow. No fuses to pull or complicated set up. Newmar runs the wire from under the steering wheel to the hitch, but you'll need to make the terminations (maybe try to get it done when you take delivery?). Ther are a lot of threads on here about the Escape battery running down while being towed. Some have added a bigger battery. I added the RVi towed battery charger for about $100. Very easy to set up and I haven't had any issues towing over 10,000 miles. We've done trips to Michigan, PA, South Carolina and Maine with no issues at all.

Good luck with everything.

Is your Canyon 4x4? It needs to be if you want to tow it.

Your tow rating is 5000 and base canyon 2wd weight lists at 3900 so add for options and 4x4 and you'll be pushing close on the tow capacity.

We towed a Chevy Sonic auto for a while until we want to go where the car could not. Swapped it for a late model Jeep Wrangler 2dr hard top. So we now can go anyplace we care to. It doubles as my daily driver. Not the most pleasant car to drive but wouldn’t swap it. I just swapped out the Freedom Panels (removable roof section) for a Bestop Sunrider. Makes letting the sunshine in much easier and quicker.

Whatever you choose take a hard look at NSA Ready Brute Elite for a tow package.

Congrats.

If your Canyon is 4x4 you should be able to tow is. We have a Colorado that we purchased and used to tow 4 down behind our 2019 Canyon Star. Worked so well as a toad that we kept it the same hook up and use it with our Cornerstone.

Check you owners manual for recreational towing or dinghy towing.

We went Roadmaster and Invisbrake. had to have a negative battery disconnect added as well. 5 mins to hook up and off you go.

We currentLy use a Honda Element as our toad, but have a ford ranger that I’m now building out. I’d recommend the stay n play duo for brake module so easy. Check out the toad forum a fair number of folks talking about the gmc trucks there

I tow both a Jeep Grand Cherokee & a Ram 1500 Crew Cab pickup. Both are 4 wheel drive & its real easy to disengage the transfer case for 4 down towing- the only practical, sane & convenient way to tow a toad! You don't even know they are back there be it not for the rearview camera!

Jeeps are very popular toads as they are easily towable 4 down.

Happy Trails

We towed a gas Canyon 4 door for 5 years. Perfect as a toad and very comfortable for four adults.

You'll be fine with the Canyon behind the Bay Star. Just be aware that you'll be right at your maximum and drive accordingly. I would certainly install a good braking system.

My neighbor tows the 4WD 4 door diesel Canyon, which is even heavier, behind his Fleetwood Fiesta with a Ford V-10. It pulls fine.

When we had our CS we had the same 5,000 lbs limit and towed a Grand Cherokee. It is near the limit at 4,600. We never packed anything in the car before towing

I tow a Jeep Wrangler JK behind our Canyon Star. It weighs about 4600 lbs, and we don't load it with anything while towing it..

I use an RVIBrake 3, and don't even know it's back there. Well, unless on a steep climb, but I don't need to race uphill anyways...

We tow a 2015 Chey Equinox. Easy tow. Good all around car for long drives (if needed) with the dog in the back.
