Actually it's the temperature sensor (thermo-couple) which provides input to the thermostat.

If you take off the cover, cage, you will see a small sensing bulb that will go back to main control thermostat where it also has a sensing unit in it for front of coach.
Some times the sensor will fall out of cover down into a wall or surface mounting on molding as pictured. If you have heat or AC problems just take off cover and see if its behind cage.

I have found that the placement of these little beauties isn't always well thought out by the manufacturers. It can wreak havoc w/your temps especially while traveling w/the slides in. Your bathroom can turn into a sauna if you run while the heat is on and you need to have the bathroom door closed.

That said, I do realize that most of our esteemed members are proud to say that they don't EVER have to turn the heat on while traveling.
