What kind of stand-alone satellite dish works
For those of you with recently new coaches do you use any kind of stand-alone satellite dish when camped under trees or have building in the way for the roof mounted dish reception, and if so what do you use and what kind of receiver do you have inside the coach?
I'm currently using a Winegard crank-up dish on the roof of my 2004 coach and a Winegard Carryout Dome for stand-alone with a Directv D10-300 receiver.
I ordered a Winegard Automatic Open Face Swm Satellite Dish with my new coach at the suggestion of the salesman since I knew absolutely nothing about the new digital technology but thinking I'd be able to use my same receiver and dish until I upgraded to a Genie.
Now I'm told by Directv installer that I shouldn't use a Genie with the Dome as it can't handle the current from the Genie. Don't know if this also includes a regular DVR or not. Not sure how much a SWM switch has to do with all this and how it will work. Read a site provided by another poster about the SWM switches which really has me buffaloed.
Just wondering what everyone else does or uses when they can't use the roof dish that comes with the coach from the factory.
Would simplify things if we weren't such TV addicts.
Being as untechnical as possible can you explain what receiver you are using (DVR or Genie if Directv), what roof top dish if any you ordered, and what outside dish you can use with your receiver?
Any help will be more than gratefully accepted as I'm about ready to crash trying to put all this together.

Hi wagonmaster2,
I use the King FLEX at
Search - satellite dish - Camping World it works as advertised. It works each and every time on the first try. I'd make the same purchase again. Setup is about as easy as it could ever be.

As answered in another thread, the incompatibility between the Genie and your old dome has nothing to do with current, and everything to do with SWM capability.
In our case, we just never park under trees. We check visibility at campgrounds using satellite maps, and won't take a spot that's blocked.

wagonmaster2,
I'm using the Winegard Trav'ler on the roof with the DirectV HD DVR model HR24 receiver. When signal is blocked I use the Winegard Carryout Dome like you have. I believe the Carryout Dome needs to hit on two satellites to align. Sometimes even that won't work because of obstructions. When that fails I use an old 18" standard dish that you aim manually. That dish only has to hit on the 101 satellite. Using the Carryout Dome or the old 18" dish will not give you HD. When switching from rooftop dish to portable I have to make setting changes in the receiver also. It can be frustrating at times.

Can you record programs with the HR24 receiver? I still have the old 18" standard dish I used to use to get out from under the trees before I purchased the Carryout but since it's so easy to set up I'd hate to have to go back to the 18" dish. Also, not sure I'd have storage capacity to carry both of them while traveling. Glad to know the HR24 will work on those 2 dishes.
Thank you for that information.

After many years of obstructions with Roof top Dishes we did not even order a satelite dish for the roof on this coach. Elected to go with a Tailgater portable dish and purchase the receiver for CW. Total invested less than $500. Works great receiving both HD & SD channels. Allows me to move around to a good location for picking up the Satellites. I installed the Dish App (Dish for my RV) on my phone for ease of locating Dish Satellites. We are very Happy with it. When parked in a open area, I climb of the ladder and just set it on the roof in front of the ladder. Yes, there are still times that Obstructions do not allow it to work. My friends with Roof tops experience More failures then I do. There is a similar dish for Direct Tv.

The R in HR24 means it's a DVR, so yes you can record programs with it.

What does King Tech have to do with any of this? The OP doesn't have one of their antennas.

For each type of service, DirecTV, DirecHDTV and Dishnetwork, the company can provide a dish (Direct calls it a disaster recovery kit) that will work.. Which service and i some cases which receiver determines which dish.

Huh? The OP already has all the antennas (dishes) he needs. Or will have when he gets his new coach. He's asking about receivers. And I can't find any "King Tech", There's King Dome, if that's what you're referring to.

Wagonmaster2,
As FlyingDiver said, you can record with the HR24. However using the Carryout or the old 18" dish you can only record on one of the tuners in the HR24 because you only have one input from the dish, unlike using the Trav'ler on the roof which has two inputs which allows you to record two programs at the same time.

Wagonmaster2, The Traveler SWM will work fine with a Genie or any DTV SWM capable receiver
