What's Hot!

Just an update on what is happening at Newmar.

1. Newmar is making 40 coaches per week.
2. The top sellers are Dutch Stat (no surprise) and the new London Aire.
3. The constraint on transport drivers does no seem to be impacting Newmar.
4. The production line is packed. Not sure is 40 is their maximum, to me it would be difficult to make more. There doesn't seem to be any more room.

Not too sure I like to hear that Newmar has increased production without a explanation on how they did that. Any ideas?

Hi JohnT,
They hired more people. Little over a year ago Newmar employed about 350. Now they employ about 750.

I think they have built another building to make room on production floor.

This continues a good sign for the RV industry. GW and myself were in Elkhart within the past two weeks. The national show for dealers was being set up with hundreds of RV's, 5th wheels and campers. The local radio had an update on the status of the industry is this area. Production in 2009 was less than 150,000 units, 2014 was stated to be over 350,000 units employing 30,000 people in the area. Toured JAYCO and then Fleetwood. Both companies had added employees.
Good for the USA.
Regards,
JimB

Hi 007,
Nope, the final assembly building is the same as it always has been. The same amount of work and work stations as always. What may have helped a bit is if one looks at the Luxury line (Aire line) all are 45' and all have the same floor plans.

Being from northern Indiana I have also heard and read that Jayco is doing a major expansion to the Entegra motorhome plant that will be completed sometime next year.

What is the constraint? Had not heard of this.

Thanks.

When we were at the factory mid-201 they were only making 12-16 units per week. I guess that was the doldrums.

I was there a few weeks ago and they said that during the height of production (pre-2008), they were turning out 15/day.

Interesting numbers; in May 2013, they claimed they were making four a day and that was what I saw going through the line. I am surprised at the 40 number as that would be a doubling. How do they increase their paint shop to accommodate those kinds of increases?

Hi JFXG,
It started almost 2 years ago and has gotten worse. In the northeastern area of Indiana there are over 14K of RVs waiting to be delivered. The problem is written about in the RV trade press. The Newmar lot housing coaches to be delivered seems to be turning over at the same level as production is turning out coaches.

Newmar employees deliver the KGDB and ESSEX coaches. All others are delivered by transport drivers.

The bottom line is transport drivers are not treated very well. The compensation package is poor. The responsibilities and liability are high. Dealers treat the drivers poorly, blaming them for everything they can get away with. The romantic view is to be a transport driver and see the USA while getting paid. The reality is far different.

Hi DLaddy,
Newmar no longer will take retail paint work. The owner must go to one of area shops or the work is sub-contracted by Newmar. In model year 2015 all Newmar coaches receive full body paint. That added to the paint workload. I do know paint prep moved to another building. This may have increased the space available for painting. Because owners are not allowed in the paint shop area it is difficult to determine if the space has increased.
