Windshield Crack

Any advice on windshield safety? We noticed a small crack perhaps 2 inches long in the bottom center of the windshield. Running my finger / fingernail I cannot feel the crack on the inside of the vehicle. We have a trip planned Friday of this week.

250 miles, 4 day stay, 250 miles home.

Would you consider it safe to drive or skip this trip and error on the side of caution.

thanks.

As long as the crack doesn't obstruct your vision, I wouldn't worry about it from a safety standpoint. It will probably get longer, and you will probably end up having to replace the windshield, but structural integrity shouldn't be an issue. Have a great trip!

We're still frozen up here, but it is pretty.

You could call someone like Safelite window repair. Maybe they can stop the crack from spreading or give you some professional advice. Good luck

I am sure it would be safe for the trip; however, the reason for the crack needs to be investigated. I got a crack like that on an Itasca MH and it was caused by rust around the windshield.

If you can get someone to drill a pin hole at the end of the crack that will sometimes stop the crack from continuing. Not sure Safelite will do that. I had a local guy in our park that has a business that does this and it has worked very well for me. There is a procedure for this repair similar to a rock ding fix. I would not worry about or cancel your plans if that small crack does not impede you vision. Just my opinion though. Eventually we will both need to get our windows replaced.

We had a similar crack near the center from a rock on a prior coach which I drove for about 2 years afterwards before it was replaced. While it did extend further up. I was not a safety issue and I would not cancel a trip due to the crack.

If it were me, I'd call somebody like Safelite that does chip/crack repair. The crack might grow all the way across the windshield before you get there. I've certainly seen it many times on cars and trucks.
If you can't feel the crack on the inside, it just means it's in the outer layer of glass. Windshields are two layers of glass sandwiching a thin layer of soft plastic.

A good glass repair guy can fix that, they will stop drill through the first layer of glass and then fill the crack with a special resin and the crack will almost disappear, there are a couple of you tube videos showing the proper way to repair it. If you don't repair, it will certainly get bigger and need to be replaced at some point, but is not a safety concern till it blocks your line of sight.

I agree with some of the others. Get the crack fixed and replace the windshield when you get home. I had one crack on a coast to coast trip. I called Safelite in the town where we were going to be camping that evening and they met us at the campground and did the repair.

As others have said, call Safelite or some other glass repair company. A rock hit our windshield and we got a 6 pointed star crack. Safelite came to our campground and fixed it for less than $100. The crack was about the 2" in diameter. The crack was less visible after it was repaired and did not spread.

About a 1 1/2 year later a bigger rock hit our windshield and a crack spread about 2 feet as my wife was talking to Safelite on the phone. We had the windshield replaced for somewhere around $3000 which our insurance paid. Safelite told us they would fix a crack if it was less than the size of a dollar bill.

South Carolina is one of the states that has zero deductible windshield replacement laws. Kentucky and Florida are some of the other states. Here is a few websites with information. Check your state as laws change frequently.
