In the bedroom, there is a step between the bed and the closet. Does anyone know it's purpose and can it be removed?
First if all it is a pain to access the bed and second, I am trying to gain access to the engine compartment.

Would appreciate your input very much.

Which floorplan??? At least in earlier models there were several very different bedroom layouts.

There’s a thread titled “Engine access with side bed” on this forum, that explains how to remove the cover.

Basically, six square drive screws hidden in the carpet. Not sure if the cover could be modified to create a flush floor.

Yup--on your 2006 with a bed slide, the "step" between the bed and rear closet is removable--both floor and side-wall under closet are removed as a single L-shaped piece....there are screws hidden in the carpet on the floor and on the side wall...a pain to find all of them. Not really possible to substantially change the step as the top of the Cummins valve cover has minimum clearance below the floor step to allow for cover removal....count your lucky-stars--2003 and earlier Alpines with this floor config, have just a 14x14 trap door for access--making it totally difficult to access the engine....

Have read many posts over time, about finding the screws that hold the step/cover on. I just finished pulling all carpet in Br, and replacing with composite plank. First, just as an experiment, I tried to find the screws. The screw heads are driven thru the carpet andpad. They will be very hard to find. I also found no pattern to their location, or how many to expect. The vertical piece, which goes up to right under the sliding mirror doors, is attached to the floor piece, and once all screws are found, comes out as ONE PIECE. The floor section fits slightly under the bed assembly, so must be pulled out by lifting the vertical side up and rotating toward the bed, then lift up and out. I think there were about 6 or 8 screws, all being within a line about 2" down from the top of the vertical piece, and the same for the short sides of the floor, in from the step-up, and in from the joining line near the head end of the bed. Since I was removing the carpet anyway, I just ripped it out and found the screws that way. You might try jabbing around with a sharp ice pick to find the heads, there is no other metal under the carpet, just plywood. Good luck. If you do remove it, I would suggest re-attaching using upholstery washers, and leaving the screw heads exposed.
