400ISL Turbo Surprise

Hi All,

Thought you might get a smile out of my latest Alpine adventure. I was headed out of San Diego going to Borrego Springs for the long weekend. As soon as I turned on Scripps-Poway Parkway and started climbing the grade up to Hiway 67, there was a POW! from the engine compartment. The coach speed immediately dropped to 10 mph. I managed a U turn and checked the exhaust--black smoke. All temp gauges were ok. The Silverleaf turbo boost setting said 4.5 psi and the max hp I could get out of the 400ISL was 147 HP. I thought I had blown a turbo cause there was so much racket/screaming coming out of the engine compartment. I limped over to RV Specialists, they crawled under the coach and found a broken turbo hose clamp! New clamp, and I was on the road again this time packing 36psi boost! Scary trip start that ended up with us having a great time at the Springs RV park.

The Alpine was trying to save you from yourself! Anza-Borrego in early September? Madness! (But it's a dry heat.)

Don't ask me how I know.

We heard our big "POW" on Top of the World Highway, between the border crossing and Dawson City, (about 1/2 mile past the grizzly), exactly 2 years ago today. And I saw the hose clamp bouncing down the gravel road. We pulled over and before I could get out of the drivers seat, I saw it bounce again after a tanker truck ran over it (going 50mph, or was it kph?). Within 10 minutes, an RCMP pulled up behind and offered two spare hands to get the elbow pushed back into place. We were back on the road in 30 minutes. Fortunately, I save the 2 hose clamps from the original turbo boot replacement 2 weeks earlier in Valdez.
Safe Travels.
