Can anyone instruct me on how to work the odometer reset buttons on my 2005 Alpine?

The manual says to hold 1 second to switch between trip miles and total miles, and hold 3 seconds to reset trip miles to zero or change from miles to km depending on what is displayed on the screen. THAT IS NOT HOW MINE WORKS!

My screen has two lines and when the key is turned on it displays ACTIA SOFTWARE and then error messages. The top line always displays total miles. The bottom line seems to be controlled by the buttons, but there are TWO buttons. The RIGHT one is marked with a "t" inside a diamond and if I hold it one second it switches between "trip 1" and "trip 2" and will reset to zero if I hold it 3 seconds.

The LEFT one is marked with a "m" inside a square. Pressing it one second cycles the bottom line on the screen through white-on-black display, trip 1, trip 2, mpg Inst F, and mpg Avg F. Holding it 3 seconds brings up a menu: 1-set units, 2-contrast, 3-Instr Diag, 4-Eng Diag, 5-Trans Diag, 6-Read Param.

I have been scared to go further in the menu to see what happens. Questions:
- What is mpg Inst F?
- What is mpg Avg F?
- What do the menu items do?
-Can I hurt anything by exploring them?
-Am I missing anything else here?

mpg Inst F = instantaneous miles per gallon fuel demand*; F is for Fuel or Fool or Fugetaboutit or some other F word.
mpg Avg F = average miles per gallon since last reset, which resetting is next to impossible to do w/out documentation or a giant hammer; F is same as above.

*Diesel computer programs have a fuel table that determines fuel to the injectors depending on inputs (pressure on gas pedal, position on torque curve, turbo boost and maybe some other variable(s). I think the guage is reporting the speedometer rate/computer-fuel rate.
Mine's busted, the number is too small
