Allison Transmission Service

I need a recommendation for an Allison service shop in Northern Cal or Southern Ore.

When the King Controls throttle unit failed I converted to an air throttle which required that I install an Allison throttle position sensor.

I used the following instructions to calibrate the TPS.

CALIBRATE THE TPS

Allison has a document that describes how to calibrate the TPS using a Pro Link 9000 unit along with an Allison cartridge.

These units are obsolete and Allison no longer uses them.

You can manually calibrate the TPS as follows:

With the throttle pedal at rest, cycle the ignition on and off six times.

Turn the ignition on and push the pedal to the floor.

That's it, good to go!

The new system works well and shifts properly- except for the shift from 5th to 6th. It holds in 5th longer than it should and then after shifting to 6th it will shift back and forth a few times between 5th and 6th.

There is no adjustment on the tps and no "easy" adjustment on the brackets that I fabricated.

The throttle/fuel lever moves through the full range of motion. And the tps cable moves along with it, but I can't determine if it is fully extended at WOT.

I am working well above my pay grade and need some advice and help from some one with Allison experience and knowledge about after market TPS.

I don't want to spend time and money with a shop/person that has to get educated at my expense.

My Cummins is the 8.3 mechanical- no electronic engine controls.
The King Control unit that failed supplied the throttle data to the Allison.

Thanks for all suggestions.

Replacing King Controller

I have the same motor and potential problem that you are talking about in my 1998 36' FDSS.
Right now I don't have any problems with the controller, but am making plans to replace the unit to avoid potential road problems in the future.
What's the best replacement for the King Controller from someone who has actually done it?
Retiring later this year with plans for a lengthy road trip next year and this is on the PM list

Msallin,

I will gather the info about my conversion to an air throttle and post it so you and others who are at risk of a failing King Control can be prepared.

It will take me a few days to get it together and post it on this forum.
