Alpine Coach Handling on Ice
Hi All,
Did you know that a 29,000 lb coach will still move backward with the brake full on? On ice of course! I was in a snowstorm working my way into a local campground (Cuyamaca). Once inside the park there were 10 inches on the ground. I got stuck, cleared the snow out from the coach rear, and put the coach in R noticing the coach had started to move on it's own with the break on. Steering was pretty much useless. Unfortunately, there was at tree arcing over the access road. When the coach brushed by the tree, it was kind enough to remove the wardrobe slide topper  . Coach now being repaired

I have seen 80,000 lb tractor-trailers slide sideways on ice with the brakes locked. Traction on ice without the aid of chains or tire studs is nearly zero.

Doesn't take too much weight to do that. I had a 16000 lb Class C that I tried to take onto a forestry road with snow and ice . Didn't take too long before I couldn't get up the hill and when I put on the brakes we started to slide backward down the hill. We then slid sideways and the front went toward the cliff (my co-pilot's side  ) and the rear went into the trees and there we stopped sideways completely blocking an active logging road  . It became especially interesting whenever we heard a logger come screaming down the hill toward us. We finally got towed out but not before the tow truck got stuck as well. Won't do that again in a hurry!! I'm sure most of us have similar tales of woe to tell.

Alpine Coach Handling on ice--update
Hi All,
The bad news, $4400 in damage. The good news, my insurance co picked up the entire tab. The company had a "vanishing deductible" so, I did not pay anything. It will be interesting to see if my rate goes up now

The only ice I want to see when I am in my coach is in the bottom of my glass.

Amen! Hey Brian I see you are from Woodburn. I grew up there and most of our family are around there. If you need any mechanic work done check out Woodburn Auto. My little brother owns the shop and they have a hoist that will lift your coach. Happy travels.

Had ours a bit (maybe more than a bit) sideways with car in tow on a bridge in New Mexico at 35mph. That was exciting!
I'll remember to turn off the exhaust brake next time we are on slick roads.

Agreed!  
I drove on enough icy roads in my work life to know that a 15 ton RV sliding in any direction is to be avoided.
