Alpine Side radiator grille

How critical are the slanted slats in the open area of the radiator grille on Alpine Coaches?
Do they create a "ram air effect" and enhance the air flow through the radiator?
Or would an "expanded metal" insert with the same amount of open space work equally as well?
Without a scoop to direct the air flow I question whether one is more effective than the other. But, I have no experience in "air flow dynamics" so I don't know.

But in case of damage to the OEM grille it would sure be simpler and less expensive to use a different material for the grille opening.

Interesting question Gene. For the most part, engine cooling on Alpines is not an issue. Whether wax valve or electronically controlled, if the engine does need cooling, the fan kicks on and meets the need. The only exceptions to this is a failed wax valve or electronic controller, a dirty radiator stack, or insufficient engine RPMs on long/hot climbs. On our older Alpines [with a wax value], there is no interface with the dash A/C's need for condenser cooling, so any reduction in air flow, for any reason could be an issue....
