Auxiliary Electric Cooktop

This 120v 2 - burner cooktop is kind of handy.

It's $60-$80 on the interweb. Longevity? mehhhhhh.

So it's lightweight with black glass to match the 2 - burner gas oem cooktop.
Super slim design so you can stash it under the sink or wherever.

Heats quite well. Bottom stays relatively cool. Legs keep it 3/4" off the countertop. The handles on each end stay cold. The vents on the bottom and back do a good job of dissipating heat. Measures 11 x 22" (25" including handles)

Both burners on high, it uses 1700 watts.
I tested it with 20A wiring and the electric cord barely got warm.

The LH burner is 8" and the RH is 6-3/4".
I tested it with large 11-1/2" pan on the left and a medium 9-1/2" saute on the right. Both pans fit with room to spare.
I tested it with hash browns, bacon and eggs--it used about the same amount of time as a real residential stove.

A large saute pan will fit on the small burner, but it will be tight.

So why would anyone want this supplemental cooktop?
Obviously 4 burners gives you more options than 2, but the reason I wanted it was for gentle low and slow cooking.

The gas cooktop can breeze through boiling water for pasta and quick saute for your scallops and shrimp.
Meanwhile the little electric guy can simmer your sauce for hours or slow-cook your pancceta or bacon, or gently work on your red wine reduction.

NOT a replacement for the gas cooktop, and obviously you'll want shore power. Not the sort of thing you'd want your inverter to have to cope with.

Very nice accessory that can also be used outside for smellier things.
Pan fried oysters and crab cakes come to mind...
You're right, most gas stove tops don't simmer very well
Dang, now you have me craving one of my favorites, a port wine reduced sauce over a medium rare ribeye with Gorgonzola crumbles.

I bought an induction portable single hob unit complete with frypan just to try induction cooking. I liked it so well I replaced the two burner cooktop in my motorhome with a two hob induction unit. I kept the single hob induction for outside use but the one inside is removable for outside use if I want.

MrD, what wattage would you estimate that to be?
There are a lot of cool features/benefits with induction.

36,
Would there be mushrooms in the port wine reduction?

Um, no, but that sounds like a great idea. Typically just a few carmelized white onions, salt and pepper. Keep it simple...
We do have a freezer full of locally picked chantrelle mushrooms though. Port wine reductions are amazing on just about anything.
We use the cheap Trader Joes Tawny Port in Julia Child fashion.
