Turns out that the switch in the battery compartment was in the "on" position, but in fact, it was not making contact inside. Once the switch was operated a few times, all is well. I will be replacing that switch.

That happened to me too.. Sort of (My switch is not in battery compartment, Controls solenoid,, Switch failed..Pulled it and cycled it like 50 times..This was 8 years ago. Still working)
