Brake Signal Connection

I need to connect my toad auxillary brake controller to my Alpine brake light signal. In my 2009 36 MDDS there are two wires a white marked "brake" and a black. I expected one to be hot until the brake was depressed, then both would be hot when depressed. But it doesn't appear to work that way. Any suggestions for the toad contoller connection?
