Broken Temp. adjusting control for dash heater

Does anyone know how the temp. control knob connects to the dash heater control ,shaft, or what ever they use, to change heater temp. from hot to cold.Mine was hard to turn and finally seemed to work correctly but now when I try to adjust hot/cold it stays hot all the time.I don't know how you would remove the panel the heater/a/c controls are mounted to.I am replacing the radio soon and maybe I can see it after the old radio is removed.I recently purchased this 1999 38 MDS Alpine Couch and been trying to fix a lot of problems, this being just one, I'm not sure about.
Thanks for any info,
Ramblinpete.

The entire dashboard cover lifts off and will reveal a large hole that gives you access to the back of the radio etc. There are just push pins that hold the cover in place. Same for the curved cover behind the instruments.

8 years ago, when the dash twist knob heat control failed, I disconnected the original non working heat control cable at the water temp control valve and added a push/pull choke cable through the dash to control that valve.
