Abused pads can become glazed, if glazing is severe replacement is probably the best option even if plenty of pad is left.

That being said I've used a plate of glass and some sandpaper to remove glazing with good results. Shops would recommend the replacement however for $$ and liability reasons.

Just back from a week of boondocking in Quartzite, AZ, with ~100 Alpines, and one regularly outstanding distinguishing features of the Alpine is the tankage. Gray water close to 100 gallons, and you can camp two for a week in the desert w/days to spare. I'd guess we could go a full two weeks w/out filling on water or emptying waste tanks. When we travel cross country, I only mess w/sewer hose & dumping every fifteen hundred miles or so, and its nice not to need the ritual so frequently.

So that's everyday and a half for us when we travel Seriously, we enjoy the size of our tanks to. That was key to our decision in buying an Alpine. Plus Patty liked it.

FYI, our brake pads at 65k looked like they were new. With the support of this group, I sure wouldn't be concerned about buying an Alpine.
