Thumbs up Headway on the Gauge dilemma

Just had a delightful interchange with a representative of Medallion Instrumentation Systems.

This inquiry started the whole thing:

An inquiry from Terry Lindgren
7143349865
I own a 2002 Alpine Motorhome which has two 4" round Driver gauges that as I understand were originally manufactured by Borg Warner Part #'s are reputed to be: Speedo w/fuel & oil pressure: 7754-00010-01 Tach w/volts & engine temp: 7754-01010-01 I am wondering if you have a replacement for these gauges and where I might be able to acquire them. Thank you in advance, Terry Lindgren

This illicited the following response:

To: Gessaman, Janel <jgessaman@medallionis.com>; Crane, Cheryl <cheryl.crane@medallionis.com>; Wallenstein, Misty <misty.wallenstein@medallionis.com>
Subject: FW: Get product technical support

These gauges should still be available. Can one of you help Terry?

Tom

I got the following response:
Hello Terry,
P/N 7754-00010-01; 5" 3N1 SPEED, FUEL, OIL Unit price 405.65
Plus freight costs , usually about 20.00 in the continental US.

2wk lead time , as we do not carry inventory here at the factory.

If you wish to complete credit card order over the phone , my contact information is listed below.
Best regards

I verified the numbers and am proceeding with the replacement of the speedo gauge.
Just wanted anybody in the same situation as me there is a solution available.

HI Terry, Did you ever order the gauges and did they work ? Were having issues with the Temp gauge on our 2002 Alpine.

The RPM guage doesn't work on my coach. I considered new/repaired gauge alternatives. In the end, I bought a Scan Gauge D. I set my Scan Gauge D to read RPM, fuel mileage, transmission temp, and volts (it will read any data the engine control module puts out). I bought my unit at Advanced Auto with a 20% off coupon. I mounted it to the bottom of my GPS.

Sort of along the same lines as this thread - In my case, all the gauges are working, I just want to replace them with newer and better looking digital gauges. Most new ones can operate off the OBDII - so getting a J1939 to OBDII adapter should work just fine. Is that correct. ??
Except for fuel gauge - it is analog. Someone told me that any fuel gauge that reads 0 to 240 ohms will work, Problem is I can not find that exact spec. I have found 30 to 240 ohms. Will that work??
Greatly appreciate any feedback or info.

One idea — Have you considered Blue Fire for Motorhomes as an update/solution? It plugs directly into the 9 pin or 6 pin diagnostic port of your motorhome and sends J1939 and J1708 information to the app via Bluetooth. I use an Apple iPad for read out. Gives real time info like RPM, Speed, Oil Pressure, Oil Temp, Boost Pressure, Oil Temp, Exhaust Temp, etc. Check it out...

The BlueFire is really nice and works great on a 8" screen Android. But it can not read a fuel sensor so you have to rely on manual calculations which are cumbersome and maybe not as accurate.

Your OEM fuel sending unit ranges from approx 30 ohms empty to 240 ohms full if it is still working correctly.

I was considering changing to it, but a major use is fuek data. Aside from having virtually no access to M/S or g**gle stores, I'll stay with the VMSpec and its random issues.

Maybe I’m missing something but my Blue Fire device allows me to easily go to the fuel fill feature on the read out/display and note when the tank is full. I quickly input tank full after I fill the tank and the fuel usage is monitored real time. No confusion - it reads out fuel consumption as we travel and when I get down to a reading of half full or less I refill the tank and repeat the quick data input process. Btw, fortunately all of my analog guages on the dash work fine (To date) so I compare the fuel consumption read outs on both and I’m convinced the Blue Fire fuel feature is accurate... Analog guages are easy because no input is needed for monitoring fuel consumption but I’m getting more familiar with and appreciate the digital Blue Fire solution especially with the engine performance info and other benefits. Cheers!

I am pretty sure both Blue Fireband and VMSpc handle fuel tank info the same way. You tell them the tank capacity and then the software reads the consumption from the EMC, deducting from the tank capacity, NOT reading the gauge. You restart the cycle each time you tell them the tank is refilled.
