DIY radiator replacement ?

Anyone replace their radiator by themselves ?

I tried the search function to no avail,...

Need to replace my radiator and am considering doing it myself. Anyone else do theirs that can offer tips on what needs to be removed to get it out ?

Looks like the fan/hydraulic motor will need to be removed, does it come out as one lump and the hoses can be left on, or does it all need separated ?

Any tips would be appreciated

Here is a post form a Monaco Dynasty owner who did the repair himself. His is a side radiator so it may be similar to yours. Starting on post #47 is where the fun begins.

To his credit he does a fantastic job of documenting the work both with video and written SOP's (he must have done this in his former life as they are very detailed oriented). I would pay attention to his detailed posts, possibly cut and paste to a separate document for reference.

I'm guessing you are just clicking on the link. the "radiator replace:" needs to be in there too. I suggest copy and paste.

Here is what I get with a Bing search:

https://www.bing.com/search?q=radiat...ANNTA1&PC=NMTS

As a kind veteran here taught me, that's true. "f104" IDs the Alpine portion in the search, so more search terms would be req'd.

Ok, I'll bite. What is fin rot?
Is this yet another thing I have to worry about and keep inspecting for?

This is when the fins between the tubes rot away and leave just the tubes behind. I hadn't heard this term before but it describes the issue perfectly.
This usually occurs with older vehicles especially if they have been driven in winter and exposed to road salt.

Xmcdog has given the perfect explanation, and depending on where you live/drive, that will determine if you need to be overly concerned. In snow-free environments, like where I live, the issue is about the fins getting bent or clogged with insects, dirt, or debris, but that is true for all radiators.

Being in Wisconsin, this may be something to routinely inspect. A side radiator draws air in from the outside, facing the street. Salty spray from traffic can easily be drawn in through the radiator fins. Again, this will depend on when and how often you travel on wet, salted streets.

The fins extend the surface area of the tubes exposed to cooling air flow through heat transfer. If they're blocked, air flow is restricted and cooling efficiency declines. If they are missing, the cooling efficiency also declines due to less surface area exposed to air flow.

Cummins told me they would have to jack it up to remove from the bottom but I'm not sure they did!

As I recall the guys took mine out through the louvered door. The pics I have don't show it jacked up.

Looks big and heavy!!
