Engine Fire
My friend has a 2000MDSS and had an engine fire while driving. What would cause a fire in the engine compartment?

Any leak from the fuel system hitting hot exhaust or turbo component, would be my first guess. Short from a power cable would be a distant second, but a lot depends on the location and extent of the fire.
Can you give more details?

The question was “What would cause a fire in the engine compartment?”
I’d go with a fuel/oil leak, electrical issue or possibly a very hot component near an unprotected combustible material.

I think it might have been the insulation on the side of the engine compartment falling onto the exhaust.

I had an alternator freeze up about 6 years ago and catch on fire. Prior to that I installed a smoke alarm in the bedroom and it went off and warned me early. I was able to get back there with a fire extinguisher in time to put out the fire and it only damaged the alternator.
When I bought the coach I installed a fire extinguisher in the engine compartment, but the fire did not get hot enough or close enough to set it off.
