Idle increase mystery

Shortly (couple of minutes) after starting the engine the idle went to 1200rpm without any input from me. Not knowing what else to do other than turning of the ignition, I pressed cancel on the smart wheel, it idled back to 700. That was the second time for this event. Any idea what is going on?

Normally when I use the cruise control to increase the idle it goes up to about 900.

Cummins engine?? Mine has an automatic high idle that ramps in shortly after startup under low ambient temperature conditions - it's in the ECM programming. That's in addition to the cruise control activated high idle feature. Perhaps yours does as well.

Thank you Rusty! The weather is cool, 38, and wet here. I had no idea there was such a feature with the engine. Yes, Cummins ISL 400.

I have a Cat 330 engine in my motorhome, and it also automatically steps up to high idle (1200) for a few minutes, then back to normal idle. That is done by the ECU, and is normal. You can also manually increase your idle by bumping up the cruise control (accel) button, and cancel it either with the cruise control switch, or by tapping the brake. This, of course, while the coach is parked.

For those with gas engines I will mention that one of the temp control features on many gas engines is a thermostat that uses the vacuum advance to change the timing if the engine starts to overheat due to a long idle.

Speeds it up to improve cooling. Just in case you ever need to know.

I do not know what age range this feature is used on I know the older vehicles (pre 90) had it but I am not so sure about later models that have control computers.. (Not so sure means I do not know, nothing more).
Home is where I park it!
