The early coaches came with two 8-D batteries, one chassis and one house. We primarily boondock so having 4-6V house is attractive. The house batteries are pretty much decided on but I haven't been able to find out what WRV used as the 2 chassis batteries. The brochures on the Tech' page just say "two 660CCA interstates" with no size.

Group 31 990CCA batteries measure out like they'll fit leaving room for one of the four 6v at the end, am I missing anything?

Why not parallel the 2 8-D batteries and make these the house battery and add another battery for the chassis. There have been previous threads showing how to build the extra battery shelf. I never understood why WRV thought we needed an 8-D to start the engine.

Thanks for the idea but the starting 8-D is a few years old and the house 8-D was seriously abused by the PO who had a blown fuse on the charger/inverter cable. The only time the battery was charged was by the alternator so it never really got fully charged and was run down pretty badly several times.

If I have to buy new batteries anyway I want to get true deep cycle house batteries. Since the 2/4 layout doesn't require any fab' work it's a slam dunk.

Just was curious if anyone is using 2 group 31s for starters or if a different size works better.

Hi Dave, Thanks for your help on my previous postings with proke problems. Your info was a life saver. I have the same coach. I changed mine last Setp to 4 golf cart deep cycle, then 2 group 31 for starting. You are right, 1 6v behind the 2 starting batteries. I had to have some new cables made. Interstate battery charged me 10.00 per battery installation, but that included making the new cables. total ticket with tax, $1169 If you try tokeep the same length on the positive and negative cables, and if yopu use the original cable from the inverter to themiddle house battery, the cover will not lay flat as before. (Most 8 D batteries only carry a 12 month warranty) Hope this helps, old trucker.

That's exactly what I was hoping for, the 31s looked and measured out to fit but those 8-Ds are heavy and I wanted to be sure they'd fit before I bought them and pulled the 8s. No problem with the cover, it and the 2 folding chairs for the dinette didn't make it past the POs.
