RPM Stopped working

We池e on the road now and our rpm gauge just quit working. We値l be back home in a few hours, but I知 trying to get ahead with some info on how to fix it.
34 FDDS 2003
As I知 writing this the gauge is intermittently reading some value, but definitely not accurate.

Your alternator may send the tac signal.

Are you showing a charging voltage ?

The Voltmeter was showing over 13 volts. After we stopped to change drivers the Tachometer started working again. We were crossing the Arizona dessert when this started, about 110 degrees. I. Now that we are back home in San Diego I will try to troubleshoot the issue, but up to now I never even thought how the Tachometer got its signal
Thanks,
James

For what it's worth, the tach on my 2003 would periodically stop working. It always recovered, usually after we stopped and restarted the engine--root cause-- could have been the start of an VCM issue--don't know. Maybe after 18 years and almost 200k miles..it just got tired once in a while????
