Steering box

Does anyone know the model # on the steering gear box how to order one? Ours is leaking oil so most likely will need to be replaced. Your help will be most appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Crawl under and copy the number's off the box.

And, if just leaking, you can certainly have it rebuilt rather than replacing with new.

There are companies such as RedHead in Washington state that rebuild them for a living.

In my past life on big trucks, I have had both the input and output seals replaced without “rebuilding” the whole box. There are a series of checks for internal play they can preform before actually disassembling the steering box. I my case, the box components were good and just seals that were needed. The truck had 400,000 miles on it at that time. This may not be a big repair with a reputable shop.

Sorry to hear about your back. I can go down to my coach tomorrow and check for a number for you. I have a 2003 model so I am not sure it would match yours, but I would be glad to look for you.

If it is the top input shaft seal, it can be done on the coach. No retiming of the arm, drag link and resetting of your safe-t -plus. Just a suggestion.

I don't have any personal experience with the gear box but this is the info I got from a quick search. It is likely a Sheppard M100 steering gear box and uses a #5544861 input shaft seal kit. I don't know what the seal kit is for the sector shaft. If you read this forum post

https://www.irv2.com/forums/f104/200...ox-302596.html

you will find lots more info and a phone # for Sheppard. Give them a call and they could likely help you find what you need.

Let us know how you get it fixed. Rebuild or replace? If you do it yourself, how easy was it to remove etc.? A good truck alignment shop should be able to swap the box out. You might also find one that will attempt to replace the seal. It is a big undertaking with a bad back.
