Transmission Fluid Change

Just wondering how often I am to change transmission fluid and filter.. I have 32K on the engine. Im pretty sure its not too often, but if it needs to be done, I would rather do it before big trip planned.
Thank you for your advice pr any thoughts.

Lots of opinions on this one--recently picked up an Allison maint. bulletin from Steward-Stevenson....With synthetic fluid, recommended fluid change interval for general use vs severe is filters every 3 years or 36k miles; and fluid and filter every 5 years or 60k--I think??? Anyway, after talking with "senior" S/S tech, I opted for 36k miles or three years for filters [lube and main] and 6 years for both fluid and filters. I figure 3 years or 36k miles is about the same for me and 5 vs 6 years isnt a biggie. You can also analyze your fluid, but I am not comfortable going beyond 6 years--IMHO.
PS-- hope you are not saying the current fluid and filters are OEM?

CERTAINLY, if fluid and filter are now 13 years old you are PAST DUE for a fluid and filter change.

If it has been changed, please let us know time/miles since change AND what fluid you used.

I just did mine and opted for the Transynd fluid. In the book it says 25k,12 months, 1000 hours for non and 100k with Transynd, 48 months and 2000 hours for oil. I have 55k miles now and have a receipt for a trans service at 30k but my receipt did not specify oil

I suggest that you send in a fluid sample for analysis. I bought my 2001 in 2018, and it only had 17,500 miles on it. I sent a sample in for analysis and the only thing out of whack was the viscosity rating. I expect the viscosity rating was abnormal because someone added the wrong grade of trans fluid to the original factory fluid. Because of that abnormal rating, I had my fluid changed. I specified the Allison fluid, Transynd.

There is an Allison Transmission Engineer that participates on this forum. He has a long running thread where he answers questions.

Here is one of the things he writes:

Route 66,

No problem. Allison has recommended oil/fluid analysis for years. I truly believe it's the only way to go. You've touched on the best kept secret ..... use it properly to safely extend drain intervals until the analysis tells you the oil/fluid is no longer useful. Get the most from your oil/fluid dollar. It's like a "Blood Test for Your RV" !!!!

Here is the booklet I mentioned--as I remember it--Alison guidance has evolved over the years. The new tranny's use internal diagnostics to monitor change intervals.

Interesting--I've been around my Allison 3000 for 18 years--doing my own service and helped may others do theirs....the specs you posted for non-295 fluid is about right but have never seen the 100k miles interval spec nor the 2000 hrs you posted for Transyn??? Yup--number of months is different eg., 48 vs 60 vs my target of 72 months [6 years] which with two filter change intervals.

Colton truck center advised me of 60k but I read the manual today and found 100k interesting. Me personally I would never go that long, in this type of vehicle I would probably run 30k with good fluid, but I am in the profession and believe in preventative maintenance

I agree with Andy about getting fluids analyzed. I have a 2000 36FDS, have had most fluids checked and glad for it, said my coolant had no corrosive inhibitors left. Flushed system and now run Peak's Global Final Charge. Its an OAT type or organic acid technology. Now I can test yearly along with other fluids for effectiveness. Also used Transynd fluid along with extended service filters. Mark

Allison Service Tip 1099C dated 2005 appears to still be the latest manufacturer's recommendations, and covers which fluid is used, and what was installed by the OEM.
Can be found as a .pdf on the internet, 14 pages of info.

The new/improved and completely backwards compatible Allison fluid is:

Allison TES 668
