WHAT CCA FOR NEW CHASSIS STARTING BATTERIES?

Our chassis start batteries have six years on them now, so I am thinking its close to replacement time. I took a look and we have a 2005 Alpine Coach 36FDDS with a Cummins ISL 400hp 8.9L diesel. It has two (in parallel) Super Start (OReilly) Fleet & Heavy Duty, product number 314J, 12 volt, 775 Cold Cranking Amps (CCA), Group 31 size.

From looking around, it seems the 775 CCA is too low. I think the Alpines came from the factory with 900 or 950 CCA? I don't know why they are in there. Maybe the guy that sold it to me was trying to save some money. I may be stressing the starter? But the 775 CCA I have seems to work ok.

To be sure, how many CCA are your Alpine chassis starting batteries?

And what do you think about AGM versus maintenance free?

Mine are group 31T (which I think stands for terminal) and they are 950CCA.

I replaced mine a couple of years ago and found replacement Interstates for around $100 a piece.

You can't have too many CCA's!

Get the largest/highest CCA batteries that will fit in your battery location. Often, height is one of the variables that can increase.

2 group size 31 batteries with 950 CCA’s will give you a nearly 50% increase over the OEM batteries. You could go bigger, heavier, more expensive, but why?

This set-up (2X950CCA) has worked well for us and seems to be the preferred choice of many other Alpine owners!

I just looked and by the 2007 MY Brochure Alpine was specifying 925CCA Batteries as standard equipment.

This may be one of the reasons so many have upgraded in later years

The 950's sound good. Especially if they moved up from 660 to 925.

If they increased the CCA's, they must been having some issues.
