Which residential refrigerator to replace NDA 1402

Can anyone confirm a residential refrigerator that fit in their Alpine, and that may fit in my 2006 Alpine 34FDDS.

I have removed the old NDA 1402 and I would like to insert a residential model that will fit in the existing opening.

I have searched the forums extensively and it appears that the recommendations that I have found seam to be flawed. They either appear to be oversized in one way or another.

I have a long list of recommendations from old threads, but I do not feel confident on nearly all that are on this list:

Samsung RF197
Fridgidaire FFTR1715LW
Fridgidaire FFHT1514TS
Samsung RF19
Samsung 18RF
Amana ARS9265BB
Whirlpool WRT134TFDM
Whirlpool1314FFDW
Whirlpool WRT104TFDW
GE GTE15CTHWW
Maytag MRT311FFFH

The Whirlpool WRT134TFDM seems to fit in the hole, but at over 32" deep, it seems that it would stick out into the kitchen pretty far. Not to mention it is single door (not a side by side) which may or may not open all the way.

In a perfect world my wife would like a stainless steel side by side that fits reasonably in the hole, but it seems that all the residential side by sides are at least 70" high. My opening height is about 64" and best, and even if I were to lower the floor to the top the the furnace (and I would prefer not to do this), that would only buy me 4" at best for a total of 68", not 70".

If you would be so kind as to respond with any modal number that you have installed or had installed in your aApine, along with any modifications that were made for the install, that would be greatly appreciated.

Bruce just posted on the Facebook group today that he replaced his again. I’m sure he’ll be along and share with you. Most I’ve seen that have done the swap, have dropped em down. Doesn’t seem to be hard or an issue.

Like this?

I did all this with no cutting on the original cabinet. There are 2 filler pieces (At the top and bottom) that will come out easily by removing a few screws and staples. We (Me and Bruce) use a rail system that lowers the unit enough to add an 18CF residential fridge. We did ours about 4 years ago and it has been awesome.

Bruce just upgraded to a new unit that has no external handles (Highly recommended). The only modification was to trim the removable panel on the bottom by about 3" off top, which is not visible when in place.

I went with a GE model (inverter compressor) and it is very energy efficient.

Paul65 Thanks for responding. I have studied your original thread and install and saw your ingenious solution with the blocks and steel rails so that you gain the additional room by eliminating a wood shelf in the middle! That picture, you did not place here, but that is the big key to what appears to be a great solution.

When I measured I was concerned that the doors would hit my light. Does it clear your Light?

Can you please give me the make and model you used?

I found a Frigidaire Model FRFG1723AV. Is this what yours is?

Did I read correctly that you requested a special compressor to work with your Inverter and if so was that a special part number or Model number?

I am using a Magnum PureSine wave inverter, and was under the impression that it would work on all residential refrigerators.

I am eager to see your responses. Thank you so much.

You mention that "Bruce" installed one with no handles. Will you or Bruce let me know which Make and Model he used and whether or not a special compressor was needed?

We went with a GE about 4 years ago. Just make sure whichever you choose you check to make sure it has an inverter compressor.... which almost every EnergyStar-rated one has these days.

Here's the model we went with

Bruce went with the new Samsung unit. You should be able to find it if you look for the 33" wide counter-depth model.

Thank you. I just returned from Lowes, and the Samsung 17.5 cubic foot counter depth is on sale now for $1300. I did not want to purchase until I heard back from you. It is about and inch and a quarter narrower than what you put in but the depth is great (only the doors stick past the hole in the wall. It has tall wheels and I think with you blocking style (no floor) and a little hollow space for the rear that has a bulge, I think that I can get it in there, and maybe be able to clear the light!

Also, I do not think I have a hinging fire window.

Now I just need to stop talking about it and get to work.

A couple more things though. Did you guys find a good solution for the light, or did Bruce manage to keep the light?

Samung 17.5 cubic foot counter depth 3 door French door
Width 32 1/8 really 32
height 70 really 68 1/2 once i remove the wheels
Depth 28 1/8 but that includes 3" doors with no handles. May have to pull out a hair so door does not bind, which is great.

I will keep you guys posted as I work on this project.

I think you may have the hinged window, you'll need to check.

You can also take out the window completely if needed.

Long day today. Driver's side living room window out. NDA 1402 out. Blocks in. solder the mickey mouse junctions next to the furnace, check. Everything removed from the new Samsung 17.5 cubic foot counter depth fridge. Samsung through the window. Put it in the hole. Pulled it back out. A little trim here, and a little trim there to my blocks. Samsung Doors back on. Put back it the hole. Whoops! the right door hits the pocket door and I can't get the shelfs it. Pulled it back out partially. Put in the shelves. Pushed it back into the hole. Two hours to shim it there, and there, and there, and back there again and again and again. Pretty happy with the way it sits. Connected the water line. Just need to pull shim out and caulk them in tomorrow.

No way there is enough room the the old light. Did either of you source a nice light to fit the hole?

Thanks for the ideas guys. Alway easier when you know someone has actually done it.

I will post pictures when install is complete.

I went with one of these. We liked it so much that we went ahead and changed out all the other similar lights throughout the coach..... much lower power and even better these have built-in dimming.

Thanks Paul. I only have 1/2/inch and those lights are .76 inches. Maybe they compress the headliner enough to clear the doors. I will attach a picture, but it keeps rotating on me.
