06 Tropi-Cal - Steps

My Kwikee electric steps came up when I left yesterday but would not open when I got to my destination. I have checked the fuse and changed it with a new one. I have tapped on the mother, tried tugging the lower step, all to no avail. Any other suggestions ?

Have you checked the switch for the steps? If that switch is OFF while the steps are extended, and then the coach is started, the steps will automatically retract. However, as soon as the engine/ignition is turned OFF and the door is opened, the steps will remain retracted because the system is OFF.

My first suggestion is to check the step ON/OFF switch. Also, depending on the coach, the steps may be powered by the chassis or coach batteries, and if either of those disconnects are OFF, the steps will not retract.

There is also a magnetic switch in the door jamb. When the door is opened, the switch closes and the steps retract/extend. If that switch is bad or out of alignment, the steps fail to operate properly. Something else to check.

This is probably the most common step problem I’ve seen and easy to diagnose/rule out.

Lots of good advise from Ljwt330, I have to ask have you ever lubed the pivots points on the steps, many people never have and that will cause the steps to freeze in place.
