1999 Tradewinds 7372 Small Switch on Dash

I recently purchased a 1999 National Tradewinds 7372. Having owned diesel pushers in the past, I have pretty much been able to figure out most everything. However, there is a very small metal switch with a red light receptacle above it on the left side of the dash. When I turn it on, the light doesn't light and nothing happens. Can anybody tell me what the purpose of this switch is? Your help would be greatly appreciated.

If the switch isn't the same style as the other dash switches, I'd expect it was added by a previous owner and you'll have to figure out what it was for. You might have someone outside to look for lights while you turn the switch on and off, also check in compartments, etc. to try to figure it out. Perhaps following the wires under the dash will lead to clues to solve the mystery.

Thanks for the suggestions Bob. It appears to be an OEM switch. I saw something in the Cat engine manual about there being a "fast idle" switch on the instrument panel. I don't know if that's it but it has no effect on the idle speed. I was hoping someone has one on their instrument panel and can tell me what it is without me having to tear things apart to trace wires, etc. Anyway, I appreciate your comments.

I would think it could be the trip odometer re-set .
Key on.
Hold for 1 sec . for trip reset .
Hold for 3 sec to switch odometer to metric.

Fast idle on F/L chassis is done with cruise , resume/acc switch . engine running , cruise one , trans neutral , FOOT OFF the brake , hold the resume/acc switch to raise idle speed.
Touch brake pedal to cancel fast idle.

Thank you Skip426 for the info on setting the fast idle. I will give that a try.

Regarding the small switch, it is not the trip reset. There is a regular "rocker switch" on the dash that does that.

I will take a photo of the switch today and post it. I'm beginning to think it must be something that is not OEM even though it looks like an original equipment installation.

More to come!

Is the switch an ON/OFF switch or one that must be held to be ON? Look under the dash and see how many wires are connected to the back. Also seeing if the wires are the same as others in the wiring loom or different might give further clues as to its function.

Photo of Phantom Switch

Here is a photo of the mystery switch. The wires to it just seem to disappear into the main wiring loom.

I'd put an ammeter on the battery and flip the switch, looking for how much power the switch needs to operate. If it doesn't twitch the meter on the chassis battery, hook up to the house battery and try again. Since the switch is next to the generator hour meter, I wonder if it could be a diesel generator preheat switch (either glow plugs or grid heater) to assist in cold weather starts. If it is, it should show a pretty good battery draw when on.

I have a similar mystery lamp on my dash, but without an unidentified switch.

It has never come on and I've not worried about it. That said, I'll be interested if you figure out the purpose of your lamp and switch.

I guess it's just too much to ask that RV manufacturers take the time and trouble to label stuff or to include something about it in the operator's manual. If I ever do ID the purpose of my switch, I will definitely post it.

That switch doesn't look like any of the rocker switches the other National owner posted. It doesn't look like any that I've ever seen installed by a manufacturer, it is a simple toggle switch that I would bet was installed by a previous owner. Blame them, not National. Now you have to do some detective work as has already been suggested to determine its purpose. Maybe it powered something the PO took with them. Do you have a labeled switch on the dash to change the radio from ignition power to House power when parked?

Could it be a kill switch for the genny?
