2000 National Surf Side - Baggage Doors
The baggage door covers were split when we purchased this 2000 National Surf Side in 2015. Has anyone repaired these panels or had them repaired? How?
Recommendations or suggestions appreciated. Buying used doors is not reasonable and am not pleased with the looks of them.

A good body guy should be able to handle it. We've had several cracked doors due to winter temperature fluctuations. Our guy embedded a wire mesh into the cracks for strength before resurfacing and finishing. We discovered after the fact to never have both latches latched during the winter, it puts too much stress on the door when it expands and contracts with the cold.

So they are made of something different than a Dolphin? I was inquiring about a 2000 Surf Side a couple years ago about 400 miles from home and the salesman told me some of the plastic baggage doors were broken, so I just forgot about it. The literature for the 03 Dolphin states they are fiberglass, and mine look like it.
I'd go to an automotive paint and supply store to see what they recommend on how to repair them. I bought a Corvette a few years ago and it had a crack in the urethane front bumper. I went and talked to a fellow I went to school with many years ago. He has done body work all his life. He told me what and where to get the repair kit. It came with some heavy stainless steel wire, sanded and cleaned the area real good before mixing the stuff up. It's been on there for over 6 years, still holding up. I'm sure there is some kind of epoxy to repair those doors.

Richard,
I just sent an e-mail to Centrex to see what they have a fix. Thanks for letting me know the name of the manufacturer.

Richard S.
Just got a reply back from CENTREX. The rep. said it isn't the company that manufactured the door shells. Couldn't find CENTRAX in the browser. Do you have any contact info for CENTAX? I'm back to square one.
Thank you,
I'm also a Richard S.

National RV would buy the Centrex material in sheets and vacuum form the parts.
Ortega MFG. bought the molds and tooling from NRV. Ortega has converted the molds to produce fiberglass parts in them. From what I understand they are high priced.

Here is what I posted from when my doors first cracked. The repair with this product has held up for over two years now.
He did the job for $400. He V'd out the crack then used a plastic welder to melt back the plastic to give more surface to fill and at the same time embed a stainless steel screen across the crack. Next he filled and fused the crack with SEM Dual Mix Multi Plastic Repair. (semproducts.com/repair-plastic-repair/dual-mixtm-multi-plastic-repair-material).

Thanks TC Wndsr,
Plastic Weld was something that looked promising. I appreciate the extra info on the exact product used to fill the crack. I'll follow the link you have in your reply tomorrow.
Again, thanks for the helpful info.

I always assumed the doors on my 99 Dolphin were CENTRAX, found out they are fiberglass when I damaged one of them.

Hi Tom,
I opened the link to the thread in your message. It is very helpful. SEM has a few distributors in El Paso. I plan to contact the closest one to find out which epoxy product they recommend for the plastic. Since we're in El Paso, severe cold isn't common; so, repairs should last awhile and no new ones should start. Fingers crossed. Ortega's costly repair is out of the question for me, but may be for some others.

Richard,
Do you know if the exterior baggage door plastic panels can be removed from the plastic door frames? I've had great success on finding the source of the SEM Plastic Repair Epoxy thanks to you, but the technical support at SEM really insists I need to seal the splits from the back before working on repairing the front.
Thanks,
Richard S. and Barb (RAB)
