2000 Tradewinds 7370 Horn Problems

Hello Everyone,

Having an issue with figuring why the horns don't work. Just bought the RV from a dealer on consignment. I need to get the horn and new wipers to have it pass inspection here in PA.
I can here clicking from the relay in panel. Took off panel and saw that that relay was a different color than the other 5 relays. So took it out and switched it for another, but still no horns, but it is still clicking.

Not sure what to look for next. Asking for any suggestions.

Thanks

Horn relay is gray color.

Hello Jeff on my 2000 tradewinds the farthest back rocker switch shuttles from city (electric) to country (air) with the engine running and at least 60 lbs of air switch the rocker to the direction and press the horn again. If you get a pretty loud blast that should take care of the horn issue for inspection purposes. The electric horn may have to be replaced in. To test it you can run wires carrying 12volts to it. Now I am basing this on my setup which is diesel. If yours is a gasser the 5hen just follow the electric horn part to test the horn.

Horn

Give your 12 volt horn a solid wrap with a rubber mallet. May need more than one hit.

I took the horn out and hooked right to a battery and works. I checked the horn fuse and it is good. The relay just clicks when I push the steering horn button. So my best guess is the wiring from the fuse panel to the horn. I hooked up at meter but did not read any voltage, was not sure if put the meter on right, as there is two wires feeding the horn. Not sure which one is positive or negative, but no voltage from both sides. Not sure how to check if it is the wiring from the fuse panel to the horn is bad?

If you have a test light , ground the lead end and probe the relay , one pin should light it. One pin will go to the horn ring and the last one should carry 12v to the horn. With the horn ring pressed the pin on the relay going to the horn shoud go hot. If not and you hear the relay clicking I would suspect a bad relay.

Have you been able to throw the horn rocker switch to"country" to make the air horns blow?

I found a video on jumping the 30 and 87 pins on the relay socket to activate the horn, but did not work. I am going to check the city/highway switch next. I am wondering if the circuit goes ( Fuse -> Relay -> Rocker Switch -> then to the horns? Fuse is okay. I tried a different relay with same part number, and it just clicks too.

Thanks

I also took off the horn cap and found that it has only one wire leading to it. And when you press it down it contacts with a metal nut. I guess to complete the ground? Seems ok, the one wire wasnt loose

Yes the rocker switch is the last stop on the 12v + side before the horn.

on mine, my air horn works when it wants, what I found, behind the generator door there was the air line with solenoid for the air horns, I pulled the line off to verify that air was being fed to there, once you figure that out, test that the solenoid is receiving power when the horn is being pressed, if it is receiving power as it should but air does not come out the other side replace the solenoid, if the solenoid functions as it should you could have something plugging your horn up top, maybe pull the air line up there and see if when button pressed it blows air, process of elimination, if you have nothing feeding the solenoid with air then follow the air line back to the tank disconnecting at places until you find the source of blockage, I doubt the electric horn works on that old model, but an electric horn can be had extremely cheap on amazon. it does not matter which way you have the volt meter hooked up here, there is 2 wires, so hook black to one and red to the other and if you get a negative voltage you know you switch the test leads. keep us posted if its clicking then your relay is working and it could be wiring between relay to the switch on dash (mine is red, looks just like the fog light switch) or wiring from switch to solenoid (air) or electric horn

Thanks everyone,

Found the problem. Wire came off the middle connector on the rocker switch. All is good.
