We are on our way home and stopped for the night. this morning the bedroom slide came in OK, but I think the shear pin broke. I tried to put the slide out; the motor turns the gear but the shaft does not turn. OUR QUESTUION: can we drive down the road to a repair shop without the slide moving out? Call if you can help with advise 605-431-8285

Not familure with your particular slide but I can tell you what Schwintec recommends.
Cut a 2x4 so that it will wedge between the top lip of the slide and the inside wall. This will prevent it from sliding back out.

Thanks, I looked at the slide frame and was able to fit a 2x2 between the frame and motor mount. We're back on the road headed home; thanks for your suggestion.

slide out

The 2004/2005 Nationals had a problem with the shear pins in the slides as they got a new supplier at a cheaper cost, therefore, poor quality pin! Easy to replace. Some have found new replacement shear pins, and some have found case hardened bolts of the same size and used those.

We are home safe and sound. Now I have to figure out how to slide the bed out so I can raise the bed to get access to the motor area. The bed is against the dresser drawers and can't be raised be cause of the drawer handles. Any thoughts on this...

Bedroom slide now repaired

We have installed a new shear pin in the bedroom slide. Having read on a previous forum thread that the bedroom slide could be manually pushed open if the pin has sheared, we tried it and it worked. The gear was in the right position to tap out the broken pin, tapping in the new 1/4"x1" shear pin was simple. I think the reason the pin sheared was the limit switch rod (not sure what else to call it); the rubber cap on the end of the rod was smashed and allowed the unit to slide more than it should. Loosened the nut and readjusted the rod to the correct length. Now the slide stops where it should and no stress is placed on the pin. Thanks to this forum and those who responded, our slide is now fixed.

Congrats. Same thing happened on our first trip in new (to us) Tropical. Slide would not come in. I was able to get the shaft lined up and inserted a screw to get it closed. Now I carry spare pins. Necessity is the mother of invention and sometimes you need to be inventive to RV!!
