The water pump seems to come on occasionally throughout the day and night and run for five seconds or so. Is air somehow getting into the line. Any suggestions?

Sounds like some type of leak. Check to see if the pump check valve is bad, water heater leaks (drain or pop off valve)
or (cold water) there's a leak in the commode allowing it to drain to your black tank (and not see a leak)
Just some thoughts.
