Ceiling Repair

We had a water leak last year around our skylight over the shower. The ceiling is carpeted and is stained. There is even a dark brown calcified looking area ( I sarcastically call stalagmite) that I cannot get chipped off.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get the water spots out or the stalagmite removed? Any suggestions appreciated.

I would take a sample of the stalagtite & place it in a solution of CLR & water to see if it dissolves it. If it doesn't, I would try hydrogen peroxide, or vinegar etc until you find something that will break it down. If you find something that works, try a small amount on the ceiling to be sure it will not bleach out the carpeted ceiling.

We have had the same thing from the rear ac. My wife used a sprayer with Oxyclean and carpet cleaner upholstery attachment. May take a few applications.

Peroxide would work the best for browning. Go to your local carpet cleaning supply co and tell them your problem. They will be glad to help you and will carry a stronger peroxide neutralizer than a grocery store peroxide.

During the last 18 years in our LTC with the fabric ceiling we have had a few water stains and always removed them with a light spray of bleach and water 50/50. Just spray lightly and let dry.

National had an idiot that didn't use sealant between the skylight curb and the roof. This is the main cause of ceiling damage below the skylight. I replaced the ceiling fabric in the shower area with white formica (counter laminate).

As Ken said, we had no sealer under the flange of the shower skylite either. In my case, 3 of the screws had been weeping for a while before the stain started to show. I found a Wilson Art color that goes well with the color of the shower. I matched the profile of the outer edge of the top flange of the enclosure. If I did it again I would come out about 2 inches further.

I took a 50/50 mixture of bleach and water in a spray bottle and sprayed on stained carpet and blotted with a clean rag and it cleaned up nicely.
