Diesel engine

Well, now i am mixed up!!!!!!! Should one start the engine and let it warm up every once in awhile while stored? I have heard it both ways and i sure want to do the right thing. It seems like there are different opinions on this. I guess the same question would apply to the Diesel Generator as well. I keep it plugged in all winter under a 46 ft. carport so the weather cannot get to it. It is a 300 turbo cat engine on a 2000 tradewinds model 7373. Thanks, Rivrduk

I think you'll find the general consensus and manufacturer recommendations are along these lines:

genset - once a month or so, start it and load it to near full load (a couple electric portable heaters can help you load it), run for 30mins or so. Purpose is to ensure the generator windings are dry and maintain magnetism.

big motor - if you can NOT take it on a nice drive when you start it, let it stay in hibernation until you can.

It's that simple....

My truck was bought off a used car lot and it was a bank repo. The Tire were COMPLETLY shot. The newest ones were 7 years old. It had been parked fo a couple of years. After replacing the tires, all lubes a nd filters and engine assy drive belt it is very trust worthy now. of course it has no genset.
We have many large electric motors at my work. even when not running there is some voltage applied to many of them to keep the winding warm and dry.
