I had mine apart for the same reason 2 years ago and I believe only the flat side of the diaphragm faces forward. On mine the gaskets on each side of the diaphragm fell out in pieces so replaced them by cutting out new ones from a sheet of gasket material. Also, when assembled, they sounded weak. The diaphragm is vibrated by a coil which has an adjustment screw on each horn to set the space between the coil & diaphragm. I took an ATV 12v. battery up to the 2 horns on the roof and. While powering each horn, I tuned each horn with the adjustment screw for maximum sound. They sounded much louder after adjusting. I applied loctite to the adjustment screws & re-assembled. They have worked fine since which has been 20K miles of traveling.
