The next time I am under the genset I will see if it looks like it could be binding. I have manually moved the pinion to get the gears to mesh and I think it's okay. Doesn't answer why it will start sometimes.

Are there variables in the compression of the cylinders each time the engine is cranked that could cause too much resistance for the starter to turn it over most of the time?

It is very interesting as yesterday I went out and was messing around and just happened to push the starter switch and it fired right up with a big cloud of dirty grey smoke which went right away. ( haven't tried to start it for almost a month) Decided to let it run for a bit , turned the AC on after unplugging the shore power and nothing happened. It does sound as if I have a bit more of a problem as there was also the sound of a belt squealing occasionally . Let it run for about 1/2 hour and turned it off. Waited about 10 minutes and it was right back to it's rrrump, rrrrump and then stopped. I hit the heater, fuel button for 20 seconds and still the same sound.
Went out today and it still won't start. Heading for a different RV shop that says he has a certified Generac tech on call.

That has happened to me in the past. The cloud of smoke only happened once I think. However, every time it starts it works perfectly, runs both ACs etc. Just won't start again.
How long do you press the heater button? I have found that 6 seconds is long enough if it's going to start at all. That button runs the fuel pump and the heater and I don't know how many amps it uses. I expect the longer it is engaged it will draw down some of the amps needed for cranking.

Do you have any pictures of the MH. I am curious how close we are to having a similar situation. Here are some of pictures of the work I have done on mine in the last few years that will give you an idea of what it looks like.

Did you ever solve this problem? Mine still won't start but during the winter I tried it a couple of times and it started. No one can explain why it would have started in cold weather but not in warm/hot weather.
