Generator dead

Just went through hurricane Florence. Used my general np-66 and it worked like a champ. Today I drove it to New Bern NC so a co worker of mine could stay in it. His house was completely flooded with 2ft of water. Long story short, I set it up and started the generator and no output power. Checked power leaving generator and had none. I am hoping someone out here can help me figure this out. Does this sound like a voltage regulator issue, and if so how may I start checking.

Thank you in advance

Have you physically shut off the breaker on the generator and turned it back on? If not do this to insure that it is not tripped.

It is belt driven. Have you checked the belt. Read somewhere where some one had wires burnt/bad inside junction box at the genny. transfer switch may not be contacting.

They say you gotta pull the genny to replace the belt, but that can be worked around sometimes. I just replaced my exaust system with the genny in the coach, belt was easy acess.
Good luck

If you have a watercooled unit, it may need a pump belt. My Onan HDKAK needed a belt and it took about 3 hours to replace. Removal of top panel, driver side panel and rear panel. I do have generator on a slide so easy to get at. Tom 07 Pacifica

OK, when you said you have no output power, does this mean zero AC volts on the VOM, or do you have around 20 VAC coming out of the generator? If you have Zero volts it could mean that your rotor is not getting flashed by the control panel. (Or of course if your rotor is not turning)., or you have open brushes.
If you are getting a small amount of voltage, then I would focus on the voltage regulator.

Check breakers at gen, inverter and inside. Start it up at the gen holding down the start switch for a slow five count (after it starts) to re-flash the fields. If no go, use a long Phillips screw driver to remove the cover plate over the electronics panel. You will see the voltage reg and a red led in center. It will glow when you have power generated. Do not remove any wiring, just check for loose connections. You can also plug in a electric drill to an outlet and turn or rotate the bit head to flash the fields so I have heard.
You might as well spend the money and order a voltage regulator. You will need it sooner or later and get oil pressure sending unit as well. Do not shut down your genie while under load, do not run both ACs and leave your water heater on electric. Sooner or later it will spike and create problems.
I have a spare vr I would gladly give you if we were closer. Take very good and close up pics before changing your vr if indeed needed. Good luck.

Try holding start switch for ~ 10 seconds after gen starts. This will insure field will flash.

Thumbs up

Thanks for the responses. I will try to hold the start button for a slow count of 5 to re flash the unit. It may be a while due to a friend is using the MH for temporary living after the flooding of his home during hurricane Florence. Thankfully he has power to plug into.
