Generator output voltage

Hello experts,

I'm a new owner of a 2000 surf-side. My generator is only putting out 5 ish volts. The voltage regulator red light is not illuminated. From my reading this could be an indication of it's failure. Before I spend the money replacing it for troubleshooting, is there any other troubleshooting ideas out there

Thanks

Floyd

No red LED probably means the regulator module is bad the potted thing with the red LED in it. These folks sell most all the parts. https://www.partsfortechs.com/asapcart/

If you haven't run it for a long time then you may have lost the magnetism in the field coils. By long time I mean at least a year. This article explains what I'm talking about better than I can. Further searching should give you the procedure for magnetizing the field coils.

FLoydster, it depends. On some VRs the red light only illuminates if there is a problem... most generally with the HZ ouput. Low output voltage could be as simple as a cleaning or replacement of the brushes/slip rings (if yours is a brushed version). Could be a problem in the quadrature. Could also be the Voltage regulator. What brand/model genset is this on?
