Generator shuts down
Hello everyone,
recently took my family on a trip to Colorado from California for my wife's 40th High school reunion. It was a hot trip and I tried several times to use my generator to run our basement type A/C while driving. It did work for a while but the genertor shut down after an hour or so. My question is that was this because of hot outside weather or other isssue with the Generator?
My rig is a 2004 Dolphine with Onan 7000 on a workhorse chasis.
thank you,
Steve

Two things come to mind.
Gen a little low on oil causing shutdown.
Fuel tank lower than 1/4 tank.

2x on the oil level. Mine is very sensitive to oil level. There are trouble codes that will be generated when it shuts down. The on/off/start switch will flash the code. The codes are in the owners manual or can be found on line.

It's possible the fuel pump is failing on an intermittent basis. We had to replace the pump on our '05 Dolphin last year.

I haven't traveled through the mountains with my generator running but I have found that if I come to a stop real fast or brake real hard the generator will shut off but I can start it rite back up. I beleive it is caused by the oil in the engine moving away from the low oil sensor.

Oil level is a very likely cause also one to keep in mind if you are above 5000 ft there is an altitude lever that needs to be adjusted to lean out the engine.

Generator
Check the spark and if you got spark, change the fuel pump.

I have a 2006 Dolphin with the 7kw generator that has had the same problem while traveling down the road. It does not have any issues when stationary so I believe this is because of overheating. My theory is that the air cooling is drawn in from the bottom of the generator and exhausted also down. When you are traveling down the road the wind from forward motion takes the air coming thru the bottom away. I am thinking about adding an air scoop to help divert the rushing air up for cooling?
