How do I get "fast Idle"?
I finally finished my project of tapping into my compressed air system, connected my hose, guages and the tire inflator.....all worked well, no leaks.....but I cannot get my engine to "fast Idle". I have read on here that if I set the cruise control "on" and push "set" that it will increase idle to about 1000 RPM's. Well, not my engine! I even push the accelerator until the rpm's went up to 1000, then pushed "set"....no luck. My normal idle is about 600-700 rpm's and it eventually gets the air pressure up to 125 lbs.....but a fast idle would be useful. Anyone else had this problem? Rook

I think if you set cruise control and then resume, you will get the fast idle. Too cold to run outside to verify right now.

Don is right, Push down on the accelerator to the rpm that you want and then and engage the cruise control. At least thats what I do .
And Merry Christmas

Different chassis maker, different system. Freightliner---cruise-on, then hit set button.

I'm not sure about rv's,,, but our truck engines,,, Cummin's will not do that ,, the cruise will not engage until a certain mph is reached... The Cat motors we have will set the cruise sitting still, as mentioned,,, (fast idle) ... I'm sure its how the engine computer is set.... So your's might not...

I've tried just about every combination of "on", "set", "resume"....nothing seems to work. I'm thinking that for my year, make, and chassis, you must be underway at some speed before the cruise control works. Anyone out there with the same make, model, chassis that I have got this to work? Rook

Had the same issue as you some time back on our F/Liner F/Wood MH. Then I discovered that each time I tried to activate the fast idle, I was sitting in the driver seat....with my foot FIRMLY on the brake pedal, hence no fast idle. Pretty lame on my part! No problem now!
Like others, ours is activated by pushing and releasing "On" and pushing "Set". I have noticed in cold weather that I need to push the buttons a bit more firmly and hold them down longer in activating the system. I also know on our coach that, once the engine warms up to a certain degree (I know not what temp.) and I turn off the speed control, I cannot re-activate fast idle with the coach idling in neutral. Speed control then works as normal when underway.
Wonder if a call to F/Liner might be of help....just dunno'. Please let us know if you are able to get your fast idle....thanks!

Not knowing a lot about Cats (even though I now own one) I can tell you that on a Cummins engine's ECM there is a parameter setting for the PTO (Power Take Off). First the PTO has to be turned on in order for high idle to work and second a high idle RPM has to be selected. Then it will work by turning on cruise control and tapping the set button. This is how our Freightliner trucks were set up. If it wasn't already turned on it required a trip to the shop where a tech would hookup a laptop to it and turn on the PTO and set the high idle RPM.

Rook.....I have a SmartWheel and the procedure is to turn cruise on and hit set for fast idle. You can also adjust the engine idle speed for everyday idling with the SmartWheel. I have a Cummins, so I'm not sure how the Cats work. I'm curios if the other posters have a SmartWheel or are able to fast idle with a regular cruise button.

I have a Smart wheel and I turn on the cruise control and then depress "set" twice.

On my Peterbilt with a Cummins it's CC off, brake off, foot on brake, bump SET on CC until deired RPM is reached. Mine bumps about 50 RPM at a time.

Spartan/SmartWheel/CumminsISC: turn on cruise, and hit set works on ours too.

I have a Cummins and a smart wheel and set my fast idle by pressing cruise and then set. Maybe you have to push set more than once in order to increase the idle speed, just like when you want to increase your speed when on cruise. All trucks with Cummins engines that I have driven that had cruise worked the same as I have said above.

Like others have said. Turn on the cruise and push set to increase idle. Park brake on and foot off brake. May want to check that your brake pedal is at the top. My work (sorry for the 4 letter word) truck (09 Pete) the clutch pedal, if not at the top, cruise will not set, and brake pedal may have similar safety switch.
